I've got 10mm plungers, but my engine is JDM and came with a boost compensator attached. I haven't been able to compare it to a NZ/AU market 1986 truck 4BD1T to find all the differences.

    How are your EGT's?

auh i see...it was difficult to find any other options for element size to fit my pump because the numbers on the diesel services computers kept on saying it was for a different frame size.

well its hard to say what the egt's where doing because i only had it like it for 2 weeks then snapped the turbine wheel off but with the boost guage sitting on 30psi the egts would climb VERY quickly (running 35's and lt85) my guage goes upto 1000c i think and 800c was reached without any trouble so if i kept the right foot down it would have been only a matter of 5secs i recon and the thing would have kept going until explosion occured the guage moves quickly upto that and does not hessitate once temps rise it keeps going.
normal driving with slight acceleration seen temps of 350c at about 10psi or so (keeping in mind it was idling at 1psi )
the thing that was noticed was that the black smoke would pour out in a jet like fashion (like the american Ftrucks in a truck pulls) but this only happened if i pushed the pedal right to the floor and kept coming out until i took it off the floor.

Normally you set the fuelling so under sustained load it only creeps up on dangerous temps. Otherwise it's just the lag in your EGT probe lulling you into a false sense of security.

It sounds like you've got enough fuel going in to be on the rich side of stoich. Which is what the average rednecks truck on youtube is like. It's not a good thing.

yeah it wasnt a good setting but then again i wasnt to worried about a proper tune because i was annoyed by having such a small turbo as weird as that sounds im currently running all VDO and auotmeter guages but i am looking at madman units just so i can set alarms but i do know what you mean about lag.

what i have been looking at lately is the garrett gt30's in BB and have seen some that have an optional exhaust A/R of 0.63 which is smaller than some t25's that have 0.64 A/R and some are finding good results but then again theres probably other factors to consider such as wheel diameter and trim but thats starting to get beyond my knowledge at the moment.

the way im thinking at the moment is spend some good money on a turbo that can push out some good figures.

The GT30's don't have compressors that are a good match for diesel. One 4BT member in Florida is running one and happy with it. But automatic and for the top end power. Those turbos are a surge risk with 15psi at 2000rpm.

The A/R ratio is only the housing, you need to look at the wheel and housing together. As wheels get bigger, A/R's need to get smaller to give the same tip speed. My T25 with 0.49 A/R had similar spool to the IHI with a 0.42 A/R but bigger turbine wheel.

Lets just say your last turbo didn't die of natural causes. If you treat the next one the same it won't either.

Thanks dougal i thought it may have been the case with the wheel size etc etc i must get time to sit and read a turbocharger book..
Im just trying to find a turbo that will match the motor but still handle well over 20psi i might be looking at a vnt then
So you recon it could have failed due to other reasons and not due to getting pushed hard ?
