Hi. My 1st post, Been lurking in all the post for some time & have noticed that on the Defender site & the Isuzu site that the gear box seems to give the most amount of trouble out of all the major components. With some of the boxes needing to be repaired in 100,000 ks on standard cars. I was wondering why there is not more use made of the a suitable auto box as no one seems to have talked about much trouble with them. Paul

I am currently about to revisit this scenario fitting it to my 110, using this time an Aisin A440F from a LC100 series TD , and a Compushift trans computer to drive it.
I haven't yet started fitting it up etc yet but the bits are amassing slowly.

What tfr case are you planning with the aisin? I was looking at doing the same with the whole setup, V8, auto and transfer from the LC. I got a bit caught up in project HP in the V8 though...
Thought i'd use the LC80 full time case (got one for 2 cartons) , but at 1:1 high range in OD lock up I'd be doing 1700rpm at 100...a bit high geared. SO, may have to go to a LT230 after all, 1.222:1 high range then at least i can retain the trans park brake, with the LC80 case I'd have to try a hydraulic park brake etc, engineer will approve it when used with a ratchet handle set up, like a cable one.
Still thinking about what to do.

Yes the LT95 and truck bellhousings are different. For the flywheel it looks like the landrover and pre 88 4BD1T are the same. Haven't had any side by side to check though.
There are a few 4BD1T and 4BD2T in 60 series in the US and Canada now. But ASTR's 4HE1 is the most interesting of the lot.
When I first read the title to this thread I didn't give any R380 a snowflakes chance in hell of surviving more than 5 minutes behind a 4BD1.After all it is still only a 77mm gearbox! But the many positive comments early in the thread apparently are reasonable evidence that it is indeed possible to polish a turd.;)
