    Various R380 gearboxes

Hey guys, what is the difference between various R380 gearboxes such as Suffix L and Suffix R etc.

Is there an R380 box which is better suited to 4BD1 in 110 county?

    Cheers

Suffix L is the best, next would be K.

Basically anything out of a TD5 era car would be the best bet.

There have only been from Suffix J to L.

    Info here:

    Ashcroft Transmissions - R 380

J's arent as strong, have smaller bearings, and are prone to breaking the layshaft, although the later boxes aren't immune in this regard.

Check your overall gear ratios too. When I swapped in an r380 I also went to a 1.2 transfer from a rangie. But I tow and have 33s.. and didn't want to labor it too much.

I didnt think there was such a thing as a r380 suitable for a 4bd1, not for a long life!

There seem to be a few behind them now and I haven't heard of one failing on the forum yet ?

Dave Ashcroft reckons the K/L 'boxes are probably the strongest factory box (prior to the MT82 Getrag)

No, strongest 5 (or 6 speed) speed box.

I believe his words were that the K/L R380s were as strong or stronger than a solid case LT85.

CHT, DRanged, and a couple of others are running R380s behind 4BD1Ts AFAIK.

Yep, and it's the best mod I've done. Made it much nicer to live with. I know many that have had it in for years and there is only one guy i've heard of that broke the 380.. and he was doing comp pulls or something crazy.
