oil light is on....hmm, what to do....

driving to work today - approx. 170 odd k's from home and towing my trailer and my oil light came (it flickers a bit then will be on for a bit then flicker again) on on the dash for the first time. so i looked at my oil pressure gauge and it is down where it normally is - around 200kpa on the freeway and 0 on idle, so i pulled over to double check oil level and it was full. i did a oil change (bar filter, iwas in a rush) about 1400k's ago, and a oil and filter about 2000k's before that (after it had been a submarine for 3 days)

so as i am far from home and have about 3 loads of 3+ ton materials to tow up the beach over the next few days, do i just cross my fingers and hope its a faulty light - keep driving and then home at the end of week and see what happens?

whats do u good (and bad) fellow suggest?

    thx
    sam

Could just be the wire for the oil pressure switch has come off and is earthing out against the chassis or engine , But that would be to easier a fix for a Rover

oil pressure sensor is wiggy and about to start leaking through the terminal.

so long as the oil pressure gauge is up over 150kpa you're apples (thats assuming its reading ok.)

i think i may be an ass, i just remembered when i put the pressure gauge on, the sender i pulled out didnt have the light wired up, so i suppose its actually just dangling around in there somewhere in the birds nest and now has probably earthed on something to bring life to the light. that could explain it. ehh i'll pull the gauge off, start it and if she shoots out oil, i'll just reinstall it and forget it for now.......

    thx

Oil pressure sensors seem to have a habit of failing.

I have had two in different vehicles cease to work in the last forty eight years.

From your description, it sounds like the sensor.

EDIT: Disregard. I will have to learn to type faster.

you've got 200 at highway speed and 0 at idle. I suspect that you'll be ok but your sender unit is either not right for the gauge, not talking to the gauge or its telling the gauge porkies.

hey thx dave, i was hoping something along these lines, i really should look into it, i suppose i would of had issues long before now if it really had no pressure at idle for the last several months, i dont think these engines are quite that tough.

I know many people who would disagree with you, and with some of the stupidity Ive seen them survive.......

Is your gauge mechanical or electrical?
