    Front drive shaft

    Hi Guys/Gals
My son has bought a county with an isuzu 4be1 and running an LT95 gearbox,it was originally a v8 county. He had to get both front uni-joints replaced today,( He had to have them done NOW ,as he was meeting his girl friend in Tweed heads today)and was told that the drive shaft was not original and appeared to be off a d2 discovery??. This is a reputable land rover workshop and i have no problems with the owners judgement so far, but, the comment was made to my son that, he should source an original front shaft because they are stronger. So my question is .
1.Is the original front shaft the better shaft?
    2. If so why?
3.And if he need one who has one or what other models should we look at?

    Cheers David

Does the shaft just have 2 uni's, or one universal and a double cardan joint?
Pretty sure the D2 is double cardan. Generally you'd only bother fitting one if you were trying to solve vibration issues or lack of angle on the standard shaft.
Has the county got a big lift?

Standard LT95/Isuzu shaft is the same as the V8/LT95 county's AFAIK. Just a normal type shaft with 2 uni's. 620mm closed length from my info.

The double cardan joint in D2 front shafts usually fail due to not being re-greasable and because the air con system discharges condensate water on the joint.

Rover has changed to smaller uni-joints over the years, i.e. from Spicer 1310 series to 1300 series.

Although the smaller OE uni's now used aren't standard 1300 series but at least as strong as a 1310 as the cross has a much larger internal diameter and the needle rollers are quite a bit longer while maintaining the same dimensions across the cross and the OD of the caps.

I might have one in the shed for a 110 County. Not sure, but I can check on the weekend. Even if it needs a rebuild it will give you a good place to start.

As far as i know the front drive shaft has two uni's on it, and no double cardon joint. What other models have a front drive shaft that would fit his county?

If it doesn't have a double cardan joint, then clearly it was not from a disco II per your 1st post.

I cannot speak for early countys but the stage 1 had a double carden front driveshaft so maybe one of those rather than a D2 shaft.
