    Damn Isuzu

Well, finally I have worn out a bit of my LT95. I noticed a slight noise, not quite a whine but close when powering on, or on a trailing throttle and decided to take a squiz. Dropped the transfer case cover to discover some shiny bits, it is time to replace the taper roller bearings.
They have done about 120K of a mix of hard towing, hi speed bitumen and lots of stop start/ commuting also.

At $11 a bearing, (Ford Falcon inner wheel bearings) I think I can afford to do all 6.

Lucky you get a good deal on labour the amount of times I've had to pay hundreds to replace a component worth a few dollars!!

120k isn't very far... Is this usual for TRBs?

the only ones worn are the centre drive gear bearings on the cluster.( i'm doing them all because)
i bought this trans in a crate about 5 years ago, who knows now long it sat around for prior to me using it, and well it has had some hard 'testing' too.
i am not aware of too many issues with these cases, but i am not upset at having to replace those bearings, and it is only about 1.5 to 2 hours all up.

You got me by saying Isuzu but silly me of course it wouldn't be the Isuzu having a problem ....
Since I have not looked at gearbox options for awhile I am wondering is there any mods such as tapper rollers etc etc for the lt85 ? I personally don't like it and it don't like the Isuzu but after it doing almost 400k without a rebuild I give it some credit as it has served well. I know I am trying to polish a turd but if I can make it a bit stronger for awhile it will be beneficial after just spending $2300 on a turbo

The LT85 IMO isn't as overall as reliable as the LT95 behind a 4BD1T, although Taper roller conversion is mandatory. Your LT230 Transfer case however is definately up to it.

I'd be changing over at some point, a good rebuild on an LT85 is more exxy than buying a reco LT95 with taper roller conversion.

    thanks justin.
i have been talking to a mate recently and he told me about an oil mod that can be done to the lt85 but in my opinion i dont believe that that will cure a mechanical weakness it will only help prolong the lifespan a bit.
well ill probably follow through with my previous idea which was drive the thing until it breaks which is not far away (plant foot uphill and it starts making some weird noises ) then throw a isuzu gearbox in then never have to worry about it again.

Well, all done took about 1.5hours. Replaced all taper roller bearings and the main transfer gear that had a bit of spline wear, less backlash now too

It certainly helps to do it after work, no phone calls or pesky customers

The rest of the internals still look as new, so very pleased with that

All well and good but finding a reco LT95 with TRB or even a used LT95 with TRB is the real task

Isuzu 5 speed and a grub conversion is my plan when funds permit .

    Hi Justin,
Any tricks to this process? I have to do mine sometime.
    Does it need shimming?

    Thanks,
    David

Hi David, hope you are well?

No Shimming with these TR brg set ups, in fact a very easy, simple and strong jigger when you come to do yours, you can give me a call if you like.
