    4be1 Turbo

    Gday,

    Went out for a race meet on the weekend to Warwick and decided in conjunction with the old man to tow the datto with the county (4be1 isuzu conversion and lt95) for the first time. After about 1km it appeared to be a bad choice.

    Some places out to Warwick such as the gap and basically every hill the poor old county just couldn't cope. I was struggling to keep up with a Frasers B-double up the gap, not very funny when its actually happening. I honestly thought that the engine was starving or something. But once the trailer was off I went for a drive and all was good so it was clearly just the 2 tonne of gear it was towing.

    As we are doing a big cape trip in sep I had the idea of turboing the car in the back of my head and now after the weekend I have made up my mind.

    So before I really decide on anything I have a question to you turbo isuzu blokes;

    1. My car has 534,000 k's and estimate the 4be1 at 300,000 to 350,000. How do you check if the engine is in good enough condition for a turbo. I understand they are a tough engine but I can't afford to blow it up for the sake of some more hp and torque.

    Any info is always appreciated

    As Rangieman said, I wouldn't be too concerned. Plenty of 4B motors have been turboed later in life, but for piece of mind I would do a compression test before doing so and keep the boost at an acceptable level - a pyro is a must to keep an eye on things.
    Cheers......Brian
