    4BD1 running temp

G,day all just asing those in the know about what tempreture my 4BD1 should be running at? I have fitted a water temp gauge and it read no more the 60 deg cel even while towing, i pulled out the thermostat and it opens up at 81 deg cel when i tested it. Thinking that the mechicanial fan maybe over cooling the engine and may go an electric fan? any one think that its running to cold?

if you're temperature gauge is wrong then who knows.

    if its accurate then yes..

it should be hitting about 85 degrees.

If your thermostat is working and shutting off, then it's pretty hard to over-cool.
Do you have anything in your cooling and cabin heater circuits that isn't stock?
I used to have an extra bypass that stopped it reaching operating temp easily, but my installation isn't anywhere near stock.

the thermostat may be failing open....

it'll close at a very low temp (lets just say <40) and open normally but once its open it will stay wide open till it gets down below the magic low temp when it closes again.

Use a bit of card or canvas or something to blanket off half the radiator in the winter. Remove it when the weather warms up. Its what I used to do as a kid in NZ.

Had a thermostat that didn't quite close fully in mine for years. Used to run around 1/4 on the Temp gauge (don't know what degrees celsius this is). After putting in a new thermostat it sits around 1/2 on the temp guage, and the heater actually works now (well, as good as you'd expect from an old Land Rover).

Decided to reduce the airflow through the radiator by about 2/3 and the truck sits around 80 deg cel. so ill go the new themistat and see if it makes a differance.

For nwhat its worth, I have had to replace the thermostat three or four times in only a bit over 500,000km, all due to overcooling!

But I still block off most of the radiator over winter to try and improve warmup - takes about 20km to reach operating temperature (restricted to about 80kph for 18km from home due to rough road and roos).
