Thread: Ideal air intake diameter?

I am still no further ahead with my system as I have other projects but I am still wondering what to do like what your thinking...
Yes the air filter is 3" inlet outlet etc etc but I'm hesitant to use 3" for a snorkel I am thinking it may be to small...however others have suggested smooth transitions are more beneficial than diameter (to a certain degree I'd imagine)

I personally like the look of the safari snorkels but if it was to be a restriction I will steer clear...suposedly there was a difference in diameter between safari snorkel models too

Nah nah all good I've been wondering same thing again lately too as im not sure what to do

Couple of points that might help.

a) If you go bigger than say a Safari snorkel you run the risk of getting done for blocking your A pillar vision. Can go very pair shaped if you hit someone or something.

On our RRC I just run the snorkel top, right at the top of the l/h guard. If I run a full lenght snorkel at 3" it triggers my filter change guage. So I keep a lenght of 3" flex in the back just incase we do a deep crossing. Rest of the time its just the top sucking in cold air. Nice and easy.

what you say about the filter change light is interesting and suggest that length is a problem on the intake side of things....i am aiming towards a second hand safari snorkel from a wreckers i think

just for interest the snorkel head on a v8 turbo diesel land cruiser is 3.5" , same as the safari snorkel head on the Td5 Defender

The longer the snorkel tube the harder it is to suck thru it, so the diameter needs to increase to compensate.

using the above if you have a 450cfm airflow the air is going at 11.6m/s thru a 3" tube and 8.5m/s in a 3.5" tube
