    My smoking ISUZU

Hello All and greetings from British Columbia Canada.
I have an Australian 1986 110 that was purchased in Queensland six years ago and which I have used in five African expeditions, in Europe and across the States last year. Its now home in Vancouver. It has about 350,000 Km now and has been incredibly reliable the only time it gave any aggro was when the alternator brush wore out in Namibia. Recently it has started to blow out clouds of white smoke on start up but once warm runs well and uses no oil. Could this be a case of the valve stem seals being worn or dry? If so can one change the seals with the head in situ or is it best to take the head off? Could this be an injector or pump problem. Inquiring minds want to know...............

    Ray

other potential sources of your problem:
If the fuel pump has never been rebuilt and you put bio-diesel through it = bad! the original gaskets and seals aren't "bio-proof"... been there done that with mine and the gum deposits etc caused lots of white smoke. The good news is this will let you rebuild the pump with larger injector elements for extra fuel per squirt if you want to turbo the car... believe me you should! the bad news is it can cost over $2k to rebuild the bugger!

Hi Ray - good to hear the 110 that DaveS sold you is still going strong! Hope Chris' is too?

I have seen dribbly injectors do that. Would be worth starting with them.

Would have to check the rebuild receipt for that, gimme a few days to get back to you. There is a thread detailing the upgrade options on here somewhere and I know others have done it too.

Ray, I would expect it is an injector or pump issue, but these Diesel Kiki pumps are very reliable, and the Injectors very high quality. Also I know 350K isn't a lot, but I would try checking compression as very cold starts will show up low comp / poor combustion problems.
In comparison mine has 600K on a pump and injectors, will smoke a bit on really cold mornings, but otherwise no issue. I have no glow circuit at all, either.
One day I'll do a compression check for interests sake.

I will reply to your PM later, Thanks,

    JC

Mine's coming up to 600k, with no service yet on the injector pump.
Wondering if I'm starting to push my luck?
Is there anything in the pump that may fail.

....I'll let you know when it happens

My engine had filters every service from new, I'm convinced this is the reason the pump is still ok, and injectors surely need tips etc by now but at 11 to 12 l/ 100km consumption and oodles of go I am leaving well enough alone....
