The only problem is there isn't enough of them for all of us to own one

That's not a problem - its a design feature to keep the riff-raff away
Anyone can have one, it just takes a bit of commitment to either wait for one to come up, or to build/convert one.

No real engine showstoppers, perhaps the closest to engine related I've experienced has been a cracked return fuel hose, which I drove on for ~ 150kms without realising when I first bought the truck... nothing that a bit of gaffer tape couldn't fix

All others have either been caused by yours truly while "upgrading" the engine , or wear and tear due to old age... and none were show stoppers either.

A rusted fuel tank (under the bash plate) was probably the closest to a true show stopper I've had, but luckily it happened just out of Kununurra, where a spare could be sourced.

A buggered fuel tank isn't even a show stopper like it is with say a Td5 with in-tank pump etc. As long as you can hook up fuel for them to suck the 4bd1 is happy.
I've run mine from a Coke bottle full of diesel when I had the tank removed and needed to turn it around on the driveway.
Would be pretty easy to rig up a jerry can on the front guard if required for longer distances.

    I can beat that!

When I had my engine delivered on a Pallet from WA, it had been in storage for at least 1 to 2 years out of the vehicle. Several months later I had it in the Rangie chassis ready to plumb everything in etc etc and I touched the starter solenoid wiring and it proceeded to fire up and run!! No exhaust etc or anything

Frightened the heck out of me and not being familiar with the Isuzu shut off system at that point I had to quickly work out what lever to pull to shut it off. There were no fuel lines hooked up and it ran on what was left in the pump and injectors, and the manifold mounted filter.

Yeah - that would have been exciting for a few moments. Lucky it wasn't in gear!!

Brings back memories of when my Dad started the old HQ wagon by reaching in the drivers window when it was in the shed. It climbed up on the workbench before it either stalled or got turned off (he wasn't sure which).
The old HQ with 3 speed would stall a LOT easier than a 4bd1 though....
