    Talking LT 85 Oil type

    Hi,

    Just changed my LT 85 gearbox in my isuzu County,
    But I'm wondering what type of oil I should run in the gearbox.

    Workshop manual says to use the following oils Castrol GTX 15W/50 , Shell Super 15w/40 or 10w/40
    But I have had a look at more updated lubricant charts, and they say to run, Castrol GTX MODERN ENGINE 15W-40 or CASTROL MAGNATEC DIESEL 15W-40 or Penrite HPR 30 20W/60

    Do I stick with what the workshop manual says to use or go with the more modern alternative?

    In my LT85 I changed to using Syntrans 75/85 a few years ago - much smoother changing (and longer working life -if you want to go down that road).

    It is more expensive - 20l drums from your BP depot or 1 litre containers from any Repco or similar - but it is better.

    You write that you have just changed the gearbox - is it a used one that you installed ? If so I'd go with Syntrans 75/85.

    NB - there is more than one grade of Syntrans.

    Yep i just changed over gearbox for another LT85

    the 'SolutionX' is to fit an LT95

    x 2 on Syntrans. Mt LT85 was getting hot and the changes were notchy, especially the synchro between 2nd and 3rd.
    Syntrans brought the temps right down and the shift is now miles better.

    Yep, that would be my ideal solution too Justin, just not as easy an option!
    Right after rebuiling my LT85, I initially used Castrol 15W/40 RxSuper (as I'd been using for the previous 10 years) for the first 1000kms, and it works ok. Then tried some 20W/50 just for fun, and it was shocking - struggled to find gears in winter until the box heated up enough. Then put in Castrol VMX 80 and it's far superior to the previous ones. Gear changes are good even in the cold, and get less gearbox chatter. Haven't tried Syntrans yet, but sounds like it may be a good one to try.

    VMX-80 is roughly equivalent to a light 10W-30 engine oil in viscosity so it will be much easier to shift when cold. (75W-80)
    VMX-M is a 75W-85. ( equivalent to a heavy SAE 10W-30 engine oil

    I'd use Syntrans 75W-85 or Syntrax 75W-90, or equivalent (eg Motul Gear 300) but be prepared for sticker shock.

    Most 75W-90 manual trans oils are equivalent to 10/15W-40 engine oils in viscosity.
