The easiest way is to pivot the lever fore/aft above the selector rod with a tail protruding lower which does the push/pull. This does however increase the height of the lever significantly and would require a re-jig of the side/side lever mechanism.

There are many more complicated ways to retain the low height and reverse the fore/aft swing.
Here is my MSA-5G setup. This has the Allegedly Austin Allegro shifter linkage grafted in. It pivots on a ball where that white paper towel is and the tongue of the lever below pushes and rotates the selector rod.
Similar concept to AM's. But his execution is far far nicer.
