This fuse idea was discussed recently in another thread, but essentially the starter current draw is quite variable (potentially 3-500A) but a fire generating short can occur at a lot less than that. Think arc welder - small contact area with large cable to supply the current.

Wire alternator to solenoid?

You just remove the Tdi stop solenoid and pull the plunger off the end and replace it.

Murray - I'm glad they are OK and got out of it lightly - could easily have be catastrophic had he not been near the vehicle.

It does highlight the fact that these vehicles are getting on in years, but are so agricultural and reliable that its easy to take them for granted. Unfortunately, while the mechanicals are nearly bullet proof, the electrics aren't - and are only going to get worse with age.
Something I've been guilty of myself is paying close attention to mechanical servicing, but not actually doing a proper inspection of hoses and wiring etc.
With Flagg's smoke incident, and now this one hopefully we all pay a bit more attention to the issue before someone loses one.

It takes 30s undoing 2x M6 bolts (10 mm spanner) to make an isuzu go again if the fuel controller electrics have died while in the off position.

For that reason I have never seen the point converting. Though when the original motor dies it may be a different story.

hang on - he roll started it??

I assume given it was facing forward over a cliff, it was A, at the top of a hill and B, roll started in reverse?? having tried it myself on the flat, on bitumen all I ended up with was a very sore shoulder when it stopped dead in its tracks!

Yep.. I've got a huge truck isolator coming that wont melt (this time). The plastic ones you get from supercheap are useless and imo a liability when something goes wrong. I always disconnect the battery when I'm not in it.

When mine shorted, it melted the battery cables and isolator switch - a huge fuse would have stopped that. (after all, a fuse is just to protect your cables). I'm going to go to a car audio place and see if i can get a 500 amp fuse, and a spare 700+ to use in winter if i need it.

The wiring in mine was so bad i could not ignore it, and while it is a long road ill get there. Ill so a thread up about it soon, once i sort out this latest hilarity.

Look forward to seeing what sort of truck isolator are you getting (and where are you mount it)? I saw a huge one on a semi the other morning and thought of you ;)
It would have been about 12cm cubed...

Personally I wouldn't touch the car audio bling stuff - all gold plating and cheap clear plastics IMO. Check out the marine stuff from a decent boat shop or chandlers. I know Blue Sea do a Maxi fuse holder rated to 750A, and I'm sure there are other good brands.

Was that in first? I found second or third easier with my old 2a. Never tried with a 4bd1 though.

Hehe yes it is 75x100mm. The handle is 75x50mm. Fitting will depend on a few things.. tbd but on / near seat box/ transmission tunnel.

Good point in the fuses...
