    Typical Isuzu County !!!!

Got a call from a mate last week, he's travelling the WA coast in his faithfull Isuzu County.
He said he and his girlfriend were relaxing in camp when the County engine started turning over all by itself and there was smoke coming from under the bonnet. To cut a long story short, he turned off the batteries and extinguished the small fire next to the starter motor...........turned out the battery cable to the starter had worn through and shorted on the chassis melting the casings of a few other wires including the starter solenoid feed and fusing the wires together.
They were parked at the top of a cliff pointing the car at the ocean for the great view..........luckily it wasn't in gear while it was cranking on the starter

Anyway, when you're not really confident in your electrical skills, how do you fix a problem like this when you're far from help.............well, when you drive an Isuzu County, you simply disconnect all the batteries, wire the fuel shutoff open, roll start the car and drive 620 kms to the nearest sparky................don't you love the lack of electronics in the bush

that is 1; the very reason i removed the edic motor and use a pull stop cable, and 2; the very reason i have an isuzu 110.
i thought to myself 'what landrover can be driven without an electrical system?'

I suppose if you took out the stop solenoid plunger, then yes a Tdi could be the same........

I don't know about other states but in Qld. automotive diesel engines after a certain date which I think was 1983 must have an electric stopper. Stop cables fitted to these render the vehicle unroadworthy in the eyes of the Transport department. An Authorised Inspector who knows the rules will refuse to issue a Safety Certificate.

I agree with the lack of electronics. This is why I bought a County-Isuzu. No little epoxy boxes that fail in the most inappropriate place and cost the earth.

Personally I would rather have a well maintained car that didn't set on fire

    Don't we all.
For me the painful part is that transition period of 1-10 years between buying a "preloved" vehicle and finding out all the dodgy stuff the previous owners have done to it.

I have a 12-24v switch in mine, so when the starter wiring crapped itself, it took two strategically placed screwdrivers to start. One to trip the 12-24v switching, the other to trigger the starter solenoid.

The electric shutdown on an Isuzu can be disconnected with a 10mm spanner in seconds. Leaving you with an engine that defaults to the run position. The only time I've needed that, was when a water-blaster got in the slighty open drivers window.

OP mentioned 'wire the fuel shutoff open' - the same would work on TDI's and the older 2.5 diesel LAND ROVER engines....

Wondering though, how many amps would a short like that draw from the battery? Would it be more than the draw from the starter and if so could you not protect against it with some kind of mega-fuse near the battery connection?

    snip
but that part of the OP was incorrect. There is no need to wire the shutoff lever on the fuel injection pump open - it has a spring that makes it default to open (the lever must be pushed/pulled against the spring to stop.

I don't see how you could 'wire the fuel shutoff solenoid on tdi injection pumps open and drive with the battery disconnected. I don't know about the earlier rover diesel engines.
