    Pinging noise

I have an annoying noise that I can best describe as a 'pinging' sound like that a petrol engine makes when it's too advanced. I thought it may be something rattling on the exhaust or engine but haven't found anything. I'm hoping someone out there has a idea or two...

    Best description I can give...
    • sounds like its coming from the left side of the engine (I have only heard it when driving...)
    • sounds like a fast metal tapping sound or pinging
    • seems to vary frequency as the revs change
    • most prevalent when engine is cold and just after starting, but still occasionally occurs at certain (high) revs under acceleration. (This has made me start to think it might be oil pressure related...tappets? It's not slow enough to be a single tappet sound...)
    • doesn't do it if I just rev the engine, only does it when driving, mostly just as the clutch is being released as i take off for the first time.

Originally, I was pretty sure it was something rattling on the engine but after searching for weeks I'm starting to think it could be internal...Anyone have any ideas?

    Do you have a snorkel?

If so, iv'e had the brass connector on the vacum line catch between the air intake hose and the steering column. Drove me nuts, and wore a hole in the intake.

If not, check under things, and use a screw driver to track it down. The noise will travel through metal things and make it seem like its coming from a completely different place.

Had a similar problem that took a while to solve.
Loose wheel nuts, easy fix, felt pretty silly.

I'd first check the valve clearances.

is it a missing rivit in the snorkle mount?

pull the rocker cover and ear-o-scope the valve gear, then do the old crack and injector union to disable a pot routine to see if you can isolate it to one cylinder or another.

Mate, the rivet has been replaced so cant be that

I think I found it... I have a custom exhaust for the turbo that uses a bolt on the bell housing for a mount, well that had fallen out and the bracket must have been vibrating on the bell housing. Well, I hope thats it

That will probably be it. I had a similar thing some time ago and it turned out to be the bracket from exhaust to bellhousing had cracked right through and the noise was the two bits rattling together. Same thing, when it heated up you couldn't hear it, took ages to find out what it was. Bit of a hit with the welder and noise gone. Very annoying to have a different noise to the Suzi clatter
