How much petrol is OK for 4bd1 to consume

Went to put in a bit of fuel on Saturday before heading off for a couple of nights. Unfortunately I was distracted by trying to decide how much to put in (didn't need the 130L tank full) and pumped in about 30L of petrol before I realised. Probably around the same of diesel before I started filling so say a 50/50 mix.

Luckily it was within walking distance to home so I grabbed another vehicle and some jerry's and drained it as best I could before refilling completely with diesel. I managed to squeeze 113 litres in so I'd say there was 10-15L of diesel/petrol mix in there before I filled it up.
I also threw in a decent dose of Chemtech Diesel Power in the hope that it might counteract any issues with lack of lubrication of the IP from the added petrol.

Its running perfectly, so I'm not too concerned, but does anyone know what sort of percentage you can get away with before you're likely to cause engine damage?

I think there's an artical on this situation in the latest RACV mag because of the growing number of diesel cars on the road.
IIRC they suggest you will be fine as long as you don't start the engine, thereby filling the fuel lines with petrol. If you drain the tank straight away and refill with diesel it's unlikely you will have any problems.

A real problem for the modern common rail diesels, but not, I would think, for the 4BD1 and its pump.

With that kind of dilution it should be ok, after all they use a 25% petrol mix when it's cold in Siberia...

You can always add a bit of 2 stroke oil for the pump if you want to.

You'll be fine, its not advised to do it often but it should come good. I did the same with my 200tdi and expected the worst when it wouldnt start, turned out to be a dodgy connection to the cut-off solenoid. It was a nerve wracking night trying to figure out how id get hold of the money for a new ip lol.

Ive got a mate that put 17 out of 70 litres of petrol in his navara and decided to keep going. Had noticeably more power but it smoked more than it usually did and was a ***** to start. He sold it shortly after so not sure if its still going.

Yeah, I would be a lot more concerned with a modern engine. If it does happen, then the 4BD1 is much more likely to come through unscathed.

trying to run it with a 50/50 mix will work but the pistons and rods are going to suffer.

I wouldnt want to try to run on more than a 10% mix for a full tank of fuel.

I definitely wouldn't have started it if it was a modern engine. The $$$ are just too scary.
Figured the Isuzu would cope with the 20m from the pump to the carpark where I could drain it.

On a related note, whats a good use for a 50/50 mix of diesel/petrol as I have a few litres to use up

Only thing I can think of is parts washing and starting bonfires in the winter.

    Petrol mix

I had a wife who put a good dose of petrol into my county, noticed the mistake and on tinier to fill it with Dieso.

Then proceeded to continue towing a good size trailer sailer from Albury to Sydney with no noticeable difference.

This was a week before setting out on a 13 month around Aus trip.

When she finally told me I changed all engine oil and filters and put some additive in the tank (in an attempt to say sorry) and drove 65,000 km in the next 13 months without any vehicle problems.

I hope you had a good trip just the same.

Burn it gradually in the County On the figures quoted, you could add 5-10L of the 50/50 mix to the tank when you refill with 80+L of diesel at the servo... wouldn't notice it!
