    4BD1T Discovery 1??

    Hi all,

    I was just wondering how difficult to put the 4BD1T in to my 300TDI Manual Discovery?? I am thinking about TOYOTA 14BT/15BT too.

    Suggestions please!

    Isuzu 4BD1T is no problem. I used a 2.5 inch lift kit to give me a bit more room for the Isuzu gearbox, clearance above the engine, and to route a 3 inch exhaust along the nearside chassis rail. It's not finished, but as far as conversions go, quite achievable with patience and a few decent workshop tools.

    The Toyota 14/15BT's (like the Cummins 4BT) require the exhaust to exit on the (right) drivers side, which I think, would cause dramas with the front propshaft and steering shaft.

    It's not a weekend swap but well worth the experience. The assistance from many on this forum is invaluable. Give it a whirl.

    @MATT

    What about the original gearbox and tranny? Can I still keep them? I am a bit worry about the ratio.

    There's a few members running 4BD1T's with Land Rover transmissions (R380) with no issues. It requires an adaptor, but the general consensus seems to go with the Land Rover LT-95 four speed, and more lately the Isuzu MXA five speed mated to the LT 230 transfer case.

    A search on this forum through the Isuzu Landie section will show a lot of information, part numbers and projects.

    I reckon an Isuzu engine/gearbox and all the other bits and pieces (mainly new), you'd have to budget 10-12 grand.

    I'd agree with that.
    For the average home mechanic that wants to do it in a reasonable timeframe and get it engineered I'd say $10-12K would be about right.

    Its definitely possible to do it for less, but you'd have to be patient and pick up bits cheaply when available, and have access to enough equipment/resources to do almost all the work yourself. Its amazing how quickly the small costs add up. A few hoses here, new filters there, bolts, hose clamps etc soon turn into hundreds and then thousands.

    Sticking to basically just dropping a factory 4BD1T engine in and hooking it up with minimal mods would help keep the cost down - but where's the fun in that
