Rear Main Seal Questions with exciting photos

    Hi there,

I am currently changing the rear main oil seal in my 1987 Original 4BD1 LR 110 and have a few questions.

The seal I took off the car is the truck type, seen on the left of the first picture.
I have bought the LR part from Zenith in Brisbane seen in the right of the first picture.

The shaft that the seal bears on is quite scored (seen in second picture). Does this mean that I need to get a wear sleeve? What is the part number for the wear sleeve?
Or, does the LR type oil seal bear on a slightly different location to the truck type seal? If so, a wear sleeve is not required as I will be sealing on a "fresh" part of the shaft.

If I do need a wear sleeve, is the LR type oil seal that I have purchased correct? Or is there another type oil seal that accommodates the extra thickness of the wear sleeve? If there is, what is that part number?

    Thank you in advance!
    Cameron

G'day Cameron, The area that the seal runs on is pretty wide and you will be able to drive the seal in a little further than the original lipped type seal that came out of it. The seal will then be running on a new surface. I have the same flywheel housing on mine and was able to do this when I fitted a new seal last time. Any photos of your rig?....Brian

I have read posts stating that you can get an Isuzu seal that includes a "thick" sleeve. I haven't personally seen one of this type. Don't know if the part number is in a sticky here, or at 4btswaps - worth looking!

I used the one as used in the perenties when I replaced mine. It has an integrated sleeve - they are made by SKF (were originally Chicago Rawhide before SKF bought out that seal manufacturer), but seem hard to obtain. There are others on here using the same seal.

G'day Cameron, replace mine about a year ago and had a badly scored shaft so went for the wear sleeve and seal to suit, which has a larger internal diameter. The part numbers shown on the boxes are 1-09625439-1 for the seal. Wear ring is 5-12319003-3. Hasn't leaked again yet.

Camron, I used a generic speedi-sleeve on my rear main (an '82 NA 4BD1). Mine also had quite a wear band. There is supposed to be an upgraded seal but I could only source the standard seal locally.

Here is the wear on mine which I put some quick metal into before installing the speedi-sleeve.

    And the sleeve installation:-

These are the old (left) and new seals and the spacer ring that I believe can be removed to bed the seal onto a new surface. But from memory the sleeve only cost around $30 so its not expensive and the same replacement seal can be used.

    Cheers
    Pete

    Thank you for the suggestions.
I have kindly been offered a SKF Chicago Rawhide type seal from a fellow member which will hopefully arrive this week.
This is one of many jobs happening on the car at the moment including the LT85 and transfer case being rebuilt and a new clutch being installed.

I have attached a picture of my 110 in its current sorry state.
Further photos to be added when it is looking a little more healthy, possibly on an upcoming trip during July to the Simpson Desert and Innamincka via Cordillo Downs Road.

    Rear seal

Hello gents, been having rear seal issues myself. Know a mechanic that has worked on army landies (isuzu). The army has a mod for realising build up of oil pressure behind the seal. They drill a small hole from the wall behind the seal into the sump as a oil return. He says he must have done about 70 of them years ago. With regards to the seal and sleeve numbers could you advise if they are isuzu or bearing company numbers. Another thing he advised me is they alway ensured to get the red seal. Thought this may be of interest to some for consideration

    Hey Pete,

Do you have the size or part number of the speedi sleeve you used?

    Cheers Brian
