    Signs of clutch going?

I'm wondering about these clutches behind the Isuzu. I'm not sure what clutch I have but it's a turbo motor and at the moment it doesn't slip when booting it up hills in fourth. However I can sometimes intentionally get it to slip in first when I hold my foot on the brake, clutch in, boost it till 15 psi and slowly let clutch out. This results in the expected clutch burn smell and slipping or stalling. I'm just wondering as I'm about to leave for a long and remote and trip that this, while not ideal, is some what expected behind a turbo Isuzu. Other signs are some slight clutch judder when cold but it soon goes away after a few changes and the pressure point is relatively high on the pedal. I've recently replaced the slave, checked the clutch pedal adjustment and ensured the right amount of freeplay is there.

Do these clutches just let go in a spectacular moment or do they just gradually slip until second no longer works? I have a new turbo clutch here but changing it is beyond my available tools.

Mmm sounds a little suspect I had a standard clutch when I first turboed 15 psi and quickly started to slip going up hill in 3rd pushing it mostly .now have a turbo outback extreme clutch part no in sticky thread all good now although sometimes smelly after clutching in rev up hill if your going bush I'd change it probably cost 8 -900 labour cheaper than recovery ..

I would of thought boosting a 4BD1T to 15 PSI and slowly letting the clutch out would be called abuse.

Well yes but better to abuse it now than in the middle of no where. Hmm I leave in 10 days.... she'll be right or sink more money into vehicle prep?

    they can go either way...

Ive seen them go gradually slipping and make another 10K Km with loving.

I've also seen them torn apart from one final too rough application.

It sounds like you've got the NA friction and pressure plate behind a now turbo donk and being able to make it slip while shoving double its designed torque limit is not unusual but its not good for it.

The juddering is a sign of a, youve glazed it and/or b. its had oil contamination.

generally IMHO they tend to go the former way and if nursed should return an additional 5K Km from the time they start to slip when pushing top cog up hill.

I`m guessing that yours is a factory fit clutch. I had problems with mine due to it being a conversion. If you do go and change your clutch. Whilst it is all in pieces take a look at the thrust bearing, spigot bearing, rear main seal and the input seal on the gear box. This is one part of your vehicle you don`t want to revisit any time soon. I noticed the signs of my clutch going was the loss of the ability to go either forward or back ward. No previous hints or signs. No noise, just broke the spline free of the clutch plate. Three hundred kilometres from home.

andrew, if you think t is slipping i wuld be changing before you head off........you wont be able to nurse it where you are going

although......i not totally sure that your test method is a good indicator unless you had a perfectly good example to compare
