How to read AULRO parts reference

Attempting to solve the age old problem - "what is the part number for XXX?".

From the AULRO parts ref, it is usually easy enough to identify the part I want in the pictures, which translates to the table of part numbers. But I am forever left with multiple part numbers which I cannot decipher.

Can anyone explain how I use the column headings to determine which part I need?

For example, in the part numbers reference thread, cornbread15 is looking for a new temp sender. I can easily get to this point:

    Then...

its a spade lug so 32-1 looks like it therefore the lines with all the 0s in it lines up with the 4bd1 1985.
the 1234 numbers seem to look similar to the vehicles vin numbers.
    thanks for looking for me.
who do i go to with this part number? isuzu land rover?
    thanks again simon

I believe the parts catalogue is for an Isuzu truck, so you need to be conscious of Land Rover variations, however they are very minimal. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that means Land Rover VIN's are unlikely to match anything in this document if indeed those codes are VIN related. The trick is perhaps knowing exactly which truck engine we got (more specific than "4BD1"), but that's the answer I don't have...

To answer your question Simon, the part numbers are good for both Isuzu dealer and Land Rover dealer. You will probably find the Isuzu dealer cheaper.

The 1st row of the columns is year.month when the engine started production. These are 80.0, 85.5, 88.5 and 90. For 88.5 and 90, you will have to go to a following page.

BTW no need to look in 90. Also be aware there can be the same suffix in 85.5 and 88.5, but these are different columns, so you need to get the year correct.

The second row of the columns is the engine suffix in columnar form. which you need to determine from the customer table 'A-1'. In the bottom row of the customer table look for Land Rover. In the upper section of the customer table are rows for year model, and the lower section for customers, e.g. JRA (Jaguar Rover Australia). You are looking for 'o' where the rows for year and customer cross the suffix column.

When you know your year and engine suffix, you have identified the correct column of the matrix to look in.

When you have the item number from the diagram, look in the column for your year and suffix to find the row with the 'o' and the item number you are interested in. In this row is the Isuzu part number for your engine.

Hope this becomes clear. Otherwise I can post some pics to help.

No the catalogue is for Isuzu Engines supplied to Land Rover, and other customers, for industrial (e.g. gen sets) and vehicle use. This is why so many columns and part numbers for the same item number.

Thanks John. I hadn't noticed the customer reference table. That makes ALL the difference!! And being specific to the Land Rover 4BD1, this really is a key resource.

Not sure whether everyone else is as noobie as I am at reading the manual, but maybe the mods should make this a sticky and ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BUY THE AULRO 4BD1 CD!!

Edit: That font is pretty big! I wonder if the mods will notice.

I didn't have time to look in the parts manual when I posted yesterday.

For the 4BD1 engines originally used in Land Rovers, the suffix at the top of the columns to use will be RB, RB01, or RBG. So the engine model is 4BD1RB, 4BD1RB01, or 4BD1RBG.

The columns with these suffix numbers are side by side under engine type 80.0

    The RB for several year.month:
    1981.9 on
    1982.8 on
    1983.3 on
    1984.6 on
    1984.11 on

    The RB01 for year.month 1984.6 on and 1984.11 on.

    The RBG was 1986 on.

Because I have a 4BD1T, not from a Land Rover, I haven't attempted to nut out the difference between suffix RB and RB01 for the overlapping years 84.6 on and 84.11 on. I wonder if there differences between army and civilian usage at that time?

The 4BD1T engines originally used in Land Rovers are suffix TRBG (4BD1TRBG). Note there are 2 columns for suffix TRBG, one under engine type 85.5 and another under engine type 88.5 for 1988 on.

I would caution about assuming that the month number aligns with our calendar month numbers - I don't know the answer, but Isuzu starts with x.0 and go to x.11. I have a suspicion x.5 may be October, but again take that with caution.

The last 2 digits of a year number are the first 2 digits of the number cast on the RH side of the engine block, low down and to the rear of the fuel injection pump.
