Pick a pipe wich ever is easierthe difference will be insignificant

Which way does the water travel in the water pump? I'm thinking of the heater pipes here as I'd like to put the valve that was in it before to shut off the water to the heater.
My assumption is that it would be best to place the valve of the hose that is taking the water to the heater, rather than the return.

After the water is cooled in the radiator it flows through the bottom hose to the pump inlet and the centre of the pump impeller. The other hose connections to the pump are also inlets. The pump outlet directs water into the jacket of the engine block.
The hot water for the heater comes from the thermostat housing, and returns to the pump inlet.
dont forget to put a small bleeder hole into the valve or never close it completely.
if you have to bleed it up later and forget to open the valve you can wind up with the heater air locked, then when you open the heater valve the air winds up trapped in the system.
if you have the traditional 4bd1 expansion tank setup you can wind up with problems

Thanks Dave. The valve that I have is spring loaded - you push it down to open it and bleed it. Here is a photo of the setup:
If I put a small hole in the T that houses the valve, wouldn't it leak? Would it also be possible to bleed it regularly? I raised the valve up a little to give it more chance of catching air passing.
I have the standard expansion tank (thought it was just an overflow tank tank though? Doesn't seem to be able to suck it back in - is this what you are referring to?)
Thanks!

the hole goes in the mechanism inside the valve that closes it so it never completely closes up like the bleeder hole in a thermostat.
if you have a push to bleed valve or a bleeder installed in the heater line and you bleed from that point, disregard as the heater will be bled up when you bleed the system.
