    12V starter

Does anyone have a recent source on 12V starters for a reasonable price?

I picked up an ebay job not long ago as AEA no longer stock them.

This is not the one that I got.. but it is the only one I could find:

Flagg, was your one out of the US, or locally? Hard question to answer, but what does the quality seem like?

I've got a 70A ebay alternator from the US and it just seems really cheap. Rough castings, binds slightly on rotation (which I think is probably just enamel on the outside of the rotor), and generally doesn't fill me with confidence. In the end I never fitted it and bought a reasonable quality 120A unit from a supplier in SA.

The alternator was one for a RA Rodeo - I wonder if the Rodeo starters might also fit the 4bd1?

Not really answering the question, but what is it that fails in a starter? Can it be rebuilt?

I had a crap eBay alt too, same deal as yours and it failed within 18 months. I wanted to get a decent starter but could not find one that I was able to inspect prior to purchase.

Got this starter out of the us, it looked exactly the same as the oex one it replaced - same factory or pattern I guess. I've fixed the old one now and will be keeping it as a spare, just in case. Would be good to get a branded one of known quality, but I became inpatient and felt that most places I spoke to would just be supplying a cheap Chinese one at a greater cost anyway.

Contacts and brushes are consumable items and can be easily replaced. Vaguely recall one bearing that couldn't easily be replaced easily, but other ones/s are no problem.
Solenoids and rotors can burn out but I haven't read many reports of that.
I do recall reading a couple of reports of commutators being too badly ripped up to rebuild. Good idea to do a mini-overhaul at a convenient time and replace the brushes to lessen the chances of that IMO.

Usually just the brushes and usually yes. Bearings are also a possibility.

It is one part though that I would like to carry as a spare - especially if travelling in remote areas alone. Most other bits can be fixed, but a dead starter is a real show stopper.

IIRC there were some photos and part numbers of different starters in Grubb's conversion thread. Not sure if they were the 3-bolt landy type or truck style mount though.
Might give some alternate numbers to search for ....

You're not parking on enough of an incline then.

I bought a second hand starter when I did my engine conversion. It was in very used condition, so I took it to my auto elec to check it out. He ended up doing a full rebuild including a whole new electric motor which actually came off a Toyota starter but bolted straight up to the Isuzu (Landy) gear housing. So, as long as your housing and solenoid are ok, at least the motor shouldn't be too hard to source as they appear to be common between makes.
