    exhaust length

I was thinking of shortening my exhaust to end before rear wheel- is there any reason why this would be a problem.

If it is a station wagon, it will be illegal (and would get the legs of any rear passengers if the engine is running while they are boarding) - the exhaust must be behind any opening window. Should be OK with a trayback, but I would check with your registration authority anyway.

If it has rear seats, it may be illegal (I assume it is a soft top) - if no passengers behind the front seats, it may be OK, but as I suggested, check with your registration authority. One point to watch is exhaust noise - these are not particularly quiet in standard form, and a shorter tailpipe may attract unwanted attention, and be difficult to defend by pointing out the exhaust is standard. Why do you want to do this anyway?

As above - why shorten it?

And there was a thread with this discussion a while ago - can't remember which one. The consensus was the same as what John is saying (maybe John was even in the other thread. ). Must be away from any part of the vehicle that can open to passengers. Beyond that, check ADR's and VSI's.

I wanted to shorten it because i noticed when i had the rear canvas rolled up-which i do most of the time so i can see what's behind me- exhaust fumes were being sucked back into the cabin. I ended up making the pipe exit out the side before rear wheel-see pic- it is a touch louder than before but not too bad. This may seem like a silly question but will the shorter exhaust affect the engine performance at all- backpressure etc? I was thinking it might be better as less restriction but i guess that aplies more to a turbo engine.

I was thinking of doing the same for power/fuel economy reasons. But with my snr com sounds like it may be illegal. Maybe go larger diameter pipe from muffler back. Doesn't exhaust gas expand as it cools? Paul.

Not too sure if any the power/economy benefits on standard 4bd1- a shorter and larger diameter exhaust on turbo model would make a difference. I did notice on the 6x6 in auction yard the exhaust exits not far behind drivers door so can't be a be a real issue as they have passengers in the back. BTW- i couldn't believe how small the turbo was on the 6x6- does it give it much of a power boost?

Smaller turbos boost harder. Go put a big turbo on and you'll lose boost.

If fumes in the back were a problem then moving the exhaust to a rear corner would make a huge amount more sense than side exit.
