Gday
Just fitting my bulkhead to the project
I want to run a stop cable rather than using the stop motor, mainly because I'm using a 300 Tdi wiring loom and I'll have to rewire it all. But also because I know the stop motors give trouble
I still have to put this car over the pits. It is a 1988 chassis number, is it legal to use a stop cable rather than the stop motor?
Thanks

I've never had a problem with the pull cable on my 85, but I have never been over the pits. Just use an electric window motor. You could always remove it and retrofit a manual cable if you have issues.
I've looked into it because mine came with a stop cable, but the vehicle is not registered, so I will be taking it for rego inspection. Certainly in VIC it's not legal. Prob not in Tassie either. However if you are taking it to get engineered for anything, then they can just engineer that as well. There are a few simple requirements if you're getting it engineered, such as must remain in stop position when vehicle not in use.
Are you getting it engineered for anything? Or going for vanilla standard rego?
I don't see a problem using the 300Tdi wiring. They have a wire that normally goes to a stop solenoid on the IP, which could be used to switch a relay for the Isuzu stop motor.
Another alternative that might suit you better is to use a similar stop solenoid to that which Ancient Mariner used. His 4H motor has the slightly different 'AD' size injection pump, but that doesn't matter. There are pics of this in one of his threads here somewhere.
A search for "diesel stop solenoid" or similar should bring up a host of solenoids that could be adapted. A couple of years ago I saw plenty, including what AM used, but I can't remember exactly what search phrase I used.
change date was in 85.
you can use a 12V solenoid to operate the fuel cut arm, they are available in a change over configuration.

When I rang Vicroads, they had little concern for any change over date. They only cared whether the vehicle had it fitted from factory or whether it was a factory option. If not (ie. County), then it will never be legal without engineering. But maybe that's because my vehicle is '86. Pre-change over date maybe you can get away without engineering....
Anyhow Jock, if you're getting the engine swap engineered, then I can't see a problem. Google the ADR's for requirements on diesel stop cable and as long as you meet those, then that's all the engineer cares about right?
A short stroke linear actuator like this one has built in limit switches and only needs a sinple DPDT relay to drive it off the ignition switch.
the 85 date is important, if you are fitting a different than original engine (swapping the v8 to the diesel) the vehicle came out before that the factory pull to stop is fine so long as it locks in the stop position (requires 2 actions to move it to start, say twist and then push in) after 85 the requirement is to have the electric stop if you are retrofitting. (this is because of the "security" requirments of electric isloation of the fuel for the engine for imobbilisers)
If the vehicle came post 85 with a factory fitted diesel and a pull to stop type cable then its fine, you can keep that configuration provided you keep the original model of engine...
most importantly, what you required depends as much on the legistlation as is does on the temperature of the coffee the inspector and assesor had in the morning and the mood they are in at the time.
