    Alternator output

I have had a none genuine alternator fitted some time ago.

On the recent long weekend i was fitting some noise proofing to the county.

At one time I managed to briefly short out between a positive post I have mounted on the seat box and the floor. The noise proofing has a metal backing.

Soon after when driving the alternator light flashed on briefly twice.

Before this the ammeter always sat a little above half way. Now it sits between half way and red depending on revs and load.

The following are the outputs now . I don't have any from before.

    Idle- 12.03 volts

Idle with headlights on - 11.93

A few revs with lights off- 12.11

A few revs with lights on- 11.96

That doesn't sound right does it?

    Pete

Sounds like just the battery, without any alternator input.

Also, at exactly 12v, the battery is almost flat. 12.7 is fully charged, and alternator should always be above that.

Hi Pte and with 11.93v with the lights on, your battery is in good condition but in need of a charge, which your alternator is not doing.

Even at idle you should be seeing high 13v to mid 14v.

With all non essentials turned off, you should be able to drive to an auto electricians and get him to look at your alternator.
