    The conversion .

Hi all, I'm in the market for a new car but there's no hurry. So I started thinking about buying an older vehicle for cheaper and doing it up a bit with the money saved. So how hard is a 4db1t conversion? Not only to do but to get engineered, do I need to make sure the engine is newer than the vehicle? Would it go into a county just as happily as a deefer? What gearbox and diff options people are happy with? Any other pitfalls or things to think about before I start spending money on a pipe dream would be greatly appreciated

What features do you want in this new car? What about an ex-military 110 with galvanised chassis, 4bd1 and LT95? If you don't mind a soft top, the mods list would probably start with power steering and turbo.

Of course if you want 5 seats and air con, then my suggestion is pretty much useless.

What are you going to use it for?
    Fun machine or daily driver?
Are you prepared to do the wotrk yourself or get it done by someone else?
Have you owned a Land Rover before and if so which one?

All questions that will point us in the right direction to give you the right advise.

    Regards,

    Phil

If you do want five seats and AC have a look at the turbo isuzu county for sale on gumtree, don't know how much they want but could be a lot easier than a conversion.

Hi all thanks for the reply's, as a ex serviceman the ex military 110 really appeal, but her indoors has said no it'd be a daily driver until I could save up for an excel or some such but the focus would be a tougher tourer to take the family to the cape or frazer. Ideally I'd like 35's and lockers

I currently have a disco 1 on 33's with reduction gears maxi drive axels rear locker winch and other bits and bobs. Plus Doris a 1983 series 3 109 ute.

Happy to do the work, mostly. My dad's a mechanic by trade and really likes landy's so we can get it done. But I'd prefer to get someone to do the hard stuff like if new engine mounts need to be welded on. I can make metal stick together but there's no strength. Lol. Hopefully I've answered most of the queries. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the reasons for ruling out an ex military 110 will also apply to most 110's / Defenders?

You could consider a RRC? A few on here have done it already. The biggest issue you face in transplanting a 4bd1 into another vehicle is getting it engineered/registered. I think 1991 is roughly the cut-off year. It will need to be earlier than that or don't bother.

Needs to be pre 1995 in VIC as ADR70 applies to vehicles manufactured after '95 and there's no documentation stating the 4bd1t is ADR70 compliant.

County's and defenders have four doors and a solid roof and can separate tHe dogs form the kids. The ex military ones are canvas roof and stuff like that. Still? Has anyone done it? What worked and what didn't?

Not sure but you could possibly go the ex military and drop a station wagon section on. Some one might know if its possible, the ex military are good trucks and the major mechanicals are all done. Defenders are starting to be appear for wreaking these days.

I'm with you on the door and seat count on the ex military ones. Not enough of either... My guess would be dropping a wagon body over the top is not a technical issue, but again, a registration issue if you add seats. You would need to ring VicRoads or read the VSI's and ADR's to check your options. If you can, then starting with an ex mil 110 and refining it is a great option.

Otherwise from the cut-off date of 1995, you are left with a pre 1995 Defender and transplant a 4bd1.
