    fuel primer pump

I just got one of those bosch primer pumps due to leaky original zexel one( it would prime but leaked fuel everywhere in the process) but the new bosch one i can't get to prime properly - pumped it many times but no fuel coming out of bleeder on top of filter. I assume you leave the plunger/spring in base of fuel pump before screwing it down. Perhaps the spring needs replacing? Any ideas?

Its been ages since I swapped mine over, but I just went and had a quick look at the old primer I took off.
I only have the pump itself in a bag, with no extra springs etc. If there were any other springs etc they must have stayed in the main housing.
From memory it was just a case of unscrewing the old pump at its base, and screwing the new Bosch one on.

hi steve- yeah that's what i assumed and have done but can't get it to bleed fuel on top of filter-strange. There's no leaks anywhere and the filter at base of pump is clean.

I'm thinking it must be the spring or plunger at the base-can these be purchased separately?

I'm totally baffled why i can't seem to bleed air out of the overflow valve- I have a new bosch primer pump with pressure and no leaks but even after countless pumps still no fuel coming out overflow valve- i removed overflow valve to see if there was a blockage but it's clear- anyone have any clues?

When you say the primer has pressure - you mean it goes hard when you pump it?
Have you tried cracking the line from the primer/lift pump into the filter and see if you've got fuel there?

I can't recall - is that overflow valve on the inlet or outlet side of the filter? Possibly a blocked filter if its on the outlet side?

Was there an original issue that caused you to replace the primer?

checked the secret hidden filter yet?

there also isnt an overflow valve in the system, there are 2 main bleed points, what are you refering to when you say overflow valve?

yes -checked hidden filter-all clear- I'm talking about the bleed screw on top of filter where return pipe from injectors connects-that's where the manual says to bleed air from the system. I can get fuel to flow out the other bleed screw on side of injection pump so primer pump must be working.

it does occasionally take an inordinate amount of priming to get the fuel filter screw to bleed, once youve got fuel at the injector pump start it up at about 2/3 throttle and then open the bleed screw on the filter.
