    Is a Getrag MT82 a possibility for a 4BD1-T

A Ford nut friend suggests that he likes the Getrag 6 speed boxes used behind Ford V8's in things like Falcon and even Mustang.

IIRC the MT82 is also the 6 speed box behind the Ford 2.4 and 2.5 Puma diesels in the Defender.

Given that the MT82 is already adapted to the LT230, is it a possibility for adapting to the 4BD1 and 4BD1-T engines?

Opinions on both the MT82 box and using it behind a 4BD1-T?

As a teenager, I made an adapter to fit a Holden 253 onto a Series Land Rover box, so with age and wisdom it can't be that much harder these days.

On the Puma I have heard that the selector mechanism is a bit plastic in its feel.

Apparently in the US racing Mustangs there have been problems not being able to select or deselect some gears, but I would assume that a car would have a remote shift mechanism where the Defender would be relatively direct on top of the box (just an assumption based upon the R380/LT85/LT95). Never driven a Puma Defender.

I've never driven a vehicle with one, or even looked inside one, but I've looked over a broken one out of a Puma and one word sprang to mind: cheap. It has an integral bellhousing too, may cause some large headaches. I agree about the ratios though, very nice.

Falcon uses the Tremec 6 speed manual, as used in he Mustang and V8 manual Commondores.

The MT82 is the Transit and Ranger box, which is used in the 2.2/2.4 Puma, and to be quite frank, I'd much much much rather fit an R380 behind a 4BD1T.

    The MT82 is a POS.

The MT82 is used in many Mustangs, and there were issues, many rectified by using a different oil other than what was originally specified by the manufacturer.

Yes they do but Ashcroft's have made a modification kit which makes a wet interface rather than greased,

Still doesn't get around the fact that it is a dog of a gearbox.

I prefer my LT95 to the Puma's and Rangers I have driven with the MT82.
