    Smile perentie

    Hi All
Im new to the forum and have recently purchased a Perentie FFR/Survey Panel with winch etc.
It already had power steering and a few other niceties thanks to the previous owner who was ex military and bought it for a fun vehicle and fortunately for me his situation changed and he needed to pass it on.
I always wanted the hard top version but was informed that they were virtually impossible to come by but my patience paid off.
A plug for KLR turbos. Ive just purchased and fitted a KLR turbo kit to our new plaything and absolutely cannot believe the improvement to the engine performance which KLR state increases HP to the wheels by 100% and I was a disbeliever of grand proportions.
I am now a believer and can well believe their claims as the extra horsepower is really astonishing, from a vehicle which struggled to hold 4th gear at 50klm on the flat it is now easy to accelerate comfortably from that speed with a loaded trailer in tow!! It does not recognise hills any more and will accelerate comfortably up a local hill in top gear with the same trailer behind whereas before I had to drop back to third without the trailer!!
It truly is amazing and I cannot give Mathew and Brad at KLR in Windsor Sydney enough thanks for their help and assistance.

    Cheers Bob K

    Welcome Bob.

    Your first post!

I know how you feel, I picked up my new Perentie from Matt having just been fitted with PAS on Friday last and it makes driving it sooo much nicer.

    Now for the turbo.

Earlier this year, travelling down to Corowa in my other Perentie with my Haulmark PT1 in tow loaded with two 14x14 tents and extra gear, I could easily travel at motorway speed. Around Gundagai we started travelling with an RFSV also heading for the Swim-In. Even with over a tonne in tow, the perentie had no trouble pacing him on the flat and down hill, in fact could have gone faster other than the 110 limit. However with any decent hill I was back to 80KPH and third was no real benefit for maintaining highway speed because it basically maxed out on revs at 80. (The lower gearing of the RFSV, probably also helped it's hill climbing ability.)

    Diana

BTW: Do you realise there is also a section for Coil Sprung Military Land Rovers like the Perentie? With lots of Perentie info.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Hi, welcome and glad you're happy with your Perentie. The turbo sure makes a massive difference, can you please fill us all in on what the turbo is, max boost, egt at 100kph, and did they dyno before and after? Any pics be great too
    Cheers, Andrew.

    Hi Andrew
The turbo KLR supply is a Garrett GT series running around 15 lb coupled to a KLR supplied exhaust manifold with a 2 1/2 inch exhaust fitted by Windsor Exhausts. The kit supplies all the equipment required for the job excluding silicons, thread locker and never seize and instructions are quite easy to follow. At this stage i havnt fitted an EGT guage but did a run on wednesday 180 Klm to Adelaide hot day 40 degrees C @ 100-105 Kph with 1500kg trailer in tow and engine temperature never hit 90 degrees C usually sitting around low 80 with economy being improved, as clearly you are using less pedal.
One thing that surprised me was that even tho the vehicle had a very good standard clutch & pressure plate they couldnt handle the torque!
On replacing the clutch the units removed were like new still showing machining on flywheel and pressure plate and driven plate looked new.
Replaced with heavy duty unit supplied by KLR which certainly handles the system but is heavier to the foot.
    Cheers Bob K
ps. No I see no reason to put it on a dyno however if you google KLR website you can view typical results

Thanks for the info, sounds like it's all working well. Similar turbo on mine, though mine a bit bigger with a bit more boost. You're right about the clutch, my heavy duty clutch has given up after only about 20000k's and are about to fit a hopefully stronger one. Have found one with a much higher clamping force of 3300lbs.
    Cheers, Andrew.

Given that the turbo install was a kit, what's the method for tuning without an EGT gauge?
Was it just a simple case of winding the fuel screw out xx turns?

Yeah i couldn't tune mine without an egt and boost gauge.

Bob's turbo is a much smaller turbo than yours Andrew, probably good for mid range power.

Hi Steve and Vern The tuning is done by means of a small guage supplied with the kit.
I understand from Matthew that the gauge is something they have developed as being an accurate measure to set up the system based on their experience from setting up in excess of 100 4BD1 turbos and it certainly seems to be successful.
With regard the size of the turbo you are quite right it is not large and I believe that the reason is that it gives very good boost virtually from idle right thru the torque band meaning very little turbo lag at low revs which is where you want torque for off-roading, not at the top end like is desirable on a road vehicle.
I had asked Matthew the same question and his response was that a lot of people use too large a turbo for the purpose.

Gauge?? How does this said gauge work??
I'd like to know my egt's and boost. Handy to know if you are under or over fuelling it.
What did you set the fuel screw at??

Yeh your right Damien mine is more than a bit bigger, good thing it is variable to still boost from low rpm. Only similar bit is its a Garrett!

And I too are curious about the magic gauge?
