Water pump leak - what's your guess?

I'm getting drops of coolant from the front of the engine which seem to be coming from underneath the water pump pulley. Any guesses as to whether it's a seal in the pump, or coming from between the pump and block?

I was hoping to drive a few hundred kms this weekend as a good test run - is my test drive dead in the water (coolant?) already? Is it likely to start gushing?

Time is becoming more important than money in the next few weeks, so I might just buy a new pump if that's easy to come by - but is there any other parts to get at the same time? Is the backing plate an extra part I should buy at the same time?

Cheers. Leak aside, damn it's nice to have it on the road!

Photos are a bit crappy, but here they are anyway:

Had the same with mine when I first got it going. Pump shaft seal was the culprit and I rebuilt the pump to fix it.
Weather isn't hot at present, so carry plenty of water, keep an eye on it and undo the coolant cap to reduce the pressure and therefore leak rate if required.
Have you got a decent gauge or engine watchdog to keep an eye on the temp?
It's not a 300tdi so you'd have to be very neglectful to kill it.

Cool, that's what I was thinking re: driving. If it leaks at current rate I doubt I'll even need to top it up. I've got a thermocouple bolted to the back of the head with a digital gauge so I can definitely keep an eye on it. I'm use to watching gauges now anyway - I own a 300TDI.

FYI the latest on pump prices:

    Isuzu dealer: $396 (part #8943768551)
Protex aftermarket: $164 delivered. (part #PWP3003)

I googled Protex and can't find any bad news. Forums on all kinds of makes and models of vehicles talking about them and can't find a report of failure. So I'll give it a go.

Just make sure the Protex one is physically the same. There are a couple of variants of the pumps with different outlets etc. Pretty sure the truck pumps aren't the same as the Landy ones.

Nice. Is GMB OEM? Also that's a different Isuzu part number to what I have for the Landy. So not sure if it would fit.

I have a protex one in the mail. PWP3004. Probably get it Tuesday.

Oh nice. If this fits and is good quality that will be great... Worth updating the parts sticky! I couldn't find a non-genuine that fitted when I looked last year.

looks like you need a new belt as well - getting a bit rough round the edges.

Yeah and now I'm on my laptop (not mobile) I see it's being sold by a Land Rover vendor. 89437668551 should be the same as WP3004. Maybe a typo?

I have a new belt here, changing water pump will be a good time to change it.
