Hi Yes I have driven another which was put together by a mate of mine in sydney and he built it up from scratch around thirty years ago and the performance likewise was pretty awesome. He was the one that suggested I go to KLR as they had done all the hard work putting a kit together which was purpose designed for the 4BD1 with the specific requirements of 4wding in mind. Whilst I agree that one could possibly mess around chasing bits and pieces to cobble together and get performance gains with a little bit of savings,
I dont believe that the effort and uncertainty of result is worthwhile when a sure fix solution is readily available.

Hi Vern, would you let us know which turbo you are talking about please?
I'm thinking about boosting my BE1 engine which is not very powerful for towing SWMBO horse float up hills. etc.
Was wondering about the legal status here in NZ as well, (mine is converted from a V8 so I guess I could argue that the horsepower is still less than original, if that makes any difference..?)
I was looking at the KLR kit - A$2750 plus shipping duty etc etc probably out of budget by the time it arrives
One more thing: Does anyone know if the engine can be run with power steering pump fitted but not connected to oil etc? Was thinking of fitting it up and driving the rig to the garage for hose fitting..
I run a td04hl -19t with a t2-t3 adapter to the stock turbo manifold. All up that cost me around $1300.
I 2nd what Vern has said. Making my own dump pipe was the hard time consuming bit. Turbo was on special for around $600 off ebay, I heard someone on here got the manifold out of the US for around $150. I also changed the filter housing to make it user friendly, to the same as Vern's I think.
Still haven't finished the rest of the exhaust, but performance is so much better I have more pressing things I need to do before I worry about it.
(like my NZ trip this week)
