    It could also be the ignition switch, if the previous owner has had a big bunch of keys hanging off it, in 26 years I have replaced my switch x 2 and I don't have a big bunch of keys hanging off it, cheers Dennis

    Easiest way is to put headlights on , get someone to watch them and then turn the key to the start position. If the lights go dull probably a crook battery or sus
    Connections on the battery. If the lights don't go dull it could be a crook connector on the starter motor preventing power to the starter. Or as others have suggested ,starter solenoid, ignition switch. Listen for a click at the starter motor solenoid.

    An other easy method to test for a bad earth (happened to me.. the earth from the engine to the chassis cracked from the vibration but still looked attached so passed visual inspection) is to get a (just one) jumper lead and connect it from the earth connector to the chassis, and then if that is the same from the engine to the chassis.

    This helps to rule out all the other little things that can break like isolation switches (also had then fail and give similar symptoms) and bad battery connections, corroded wire termination etc.
