Were you on the flat when trying to pop it out of third?
I've been doing a lot of towing car trailers lately in my newly converted 130 Defender pulling these G wagons home to Batemans Bay.
I now have three of these Mercedes contraptions for some reason. The 130 rig has pulled these loads for some time now- about 10 000km or more over the last six months without issue up hill and down dale. I am now however a bit tired of the little TB2518 Garrett turbo however.
Anyways, Late Saturday night, towing a load on the back- estimate 3300kg weight coming down Mount Ousley trying to keep road speed manageable- third gear is selected on extended trailing throttle- when I get to the bottom of the mountain, she refuses to let go of third gear.
Eventually, with a shove and a bit of pressure on the gear lever, it lets 3rd gear go into neutral. By this time I'm doing about 30km/h. I then go ahead and check each gear selection 2nd, 3rd again and 4th- now fine- a little stiff going into 4th at first but this could be subjective impression.
The box is still quiet, synchros are good- absolutely nil seeming effect of this event. Proceeded to get home without issue.
Brains Trust....any idea why this would happen? Any thoughts?

Similar thing happened to me ehen i spent a day idling around in 2nd and 3rd low. Had some big problems getting gears until the next morning when the box had cooled off. A few notchy shifts during the day especially into 3rd and 4th but then all ok. I changed the oil when i got back from the trip and it was fine afterwards.

Whilst I haven't experienced this myself about the only thing I can think of that would cause this is input shaft endfloat. When you are going downhill using enginebraking the load on the gears and synchro hub is reversed (that is the load is driving the engine through the t/case and gearbox instead of the reverse happening under power). If the input shaft bearing is loose in the housing it can make it move enough to put some pressure on the 3/4 synchro hub inner and possibly move it a little tighter against 3rd gear. Bent input bearing lock tabs or wear on the cover plate are usually what causes the endfloat. One way to check if you have it is alternate between on and off the throttle while holding your hand on the gearlever. If it moves it indicates some endfloat. If it still feels ok and doesn't give any more problems I would keep using it. See what the oil and the magnet look like next time you change it.

Good point Brian. A year later when i did the TRB conversion i removed and stripped the transmission and yes the input bearing retainers were bent... possibly the reason it didn't reappear was due to it being used for light duties after the initial trip...

Thanks Brian & Justin. The oil change I will do...It is an AFM box. I've done the gearbox oil twice already just to check what was living in the gauze filter and on the magnet- turned out to be a waste of oil (still good with no metallic elements being present).
Thing is- those input bearing lock tabs are more than likely bent.
I think I did this on 1st insertion of the engine where the clutch was not perfectly aligned and I attempted to mate up engine to bellhousing with extended bolts.
So it will have to come out possibly sooner than later- but I still have one more heavy load to tow- this time from the back of no-where to home.
In regards to movement of the shifter rocking under power (on and off the accelerator)- there is no movement on the 3 / 4 plane, but there is mild perceptible movement at 2nd if I hold the shift- very mild but still present.
mmm...Should I risk doing the next load...
The only thing i noticed was the the baulkring 3rd to 4th was badly unevenly worn due to the end float and misalignment. Other than that i just replaced input brg and baulk rings throughout and bunged it back together.
