    Back to a slushbox

We're 75% through the fitting of an autobox into the county. My shoulder is suffering badly everytime i drive the 110 and making it hard to enjoy the experience. Also i really miss the way the engine and auto work together with all that torque...

So this time I'm using a later v8 converter and 4hp22h, a tdi valve body and a huge cooler with a 1.222 lt230 transfer case.

The last attempts were using a midmatched valve body which played havoc with line pressures and subsequently took clutch linings off in record time and due to a stupid amount of boost and Nm ended up flipping sprags and sll sorts of bother...

I have wound the power output back, grown up a bit now, and no longer tow huge loads at stupid speeds so I'm hopeful this gearbag will survive.

Pics and a report to come, may hsve it actually running early next week.

    Jc 😊

So am I Ben... feeling pretty positive as this time the engine has been significantly detuned and iys not towing etc etc. I'm also going to try a 3rd lockup mod on it .

The tdi valve body allows lots more line pressure at throttle settings that would make the v8 one shift down a gear. That was the main issue i slso had before as the kickdown cable and the lever ratio were a big compromise in order to enable reasonable upshifts. ..

    So here's hoping. .

No Luck with sorting a Torqueflight 722 box?? I would have hoped that this box was a goer. Hoping that you would have found solution to the various fitment issues.
    Cheers steu

Hi mate after i calculated that 33" tyres were the minimum required to be able to travel long distances in a relaxed manner ( in fact 35"s are ideal) i decided a torque converter with lockup is the best way to go. Coupled with a reduction in big torque impulses and a properly 'programmed' valve body the 4hp22 should survive... the 727 is the next on the list if it doesn't. Will have to upgrade to bigger rubber though ..

One of the best things I did with my pos was putting a Ritters C9 / LT95 behind the 350. C9 was rebuilt for $850 to handle 700 hp which my 350 doesn't have at 600k km +.

Transforms those old LR weaknesses, even with only 3 speeds.

I wouldn't even think about putting a ZF LR box behind something that has some grunt.

IMO the Ford C4 / 9's don't suffer from the same power drag that you get from 727's.

    cheers, DL

Agreed the 4hp22 is not ideal however dince i have all the bits already and have done a few mods to better suit the 4bd1t I'll give it another crack. The 1:1 gearing just isn't high enough especially without a tc lock.

    A 4l80e would be better with a compushift etc but $$$ 😑
