Sounds like a stage 1 to me....because of the two piece screen, the S3 interior, the flush radiator panel, and some Stage 1's did come with the Isuzu.
I'm sure I'll have many more questions to come in following weeks but for now I need to start by knowing what I have.
A few years ago I bought a project from a mate and now it's time to get it out and do something with it.
It's a 1982 isuzu powered 109. leaf springs, drum brakes, armstrong stearing, centre diff.
It started as a 4 door wagon complete with safari roof but has been converted to a cab chassis and repainted in original grey ready for a tray.
The bonnet, wings and grille look county, the interior is just like my series III, the windscreen is also 2 piece.
My initial thought was stage 1, but my friend who sold it, now tells me it's not. How do I tell?
I understand there are variants in the engine as well but I expect mine is an early version.
I'm sure there are plenty of identifiers I can look for, so hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
Many thanks,
Rob

My 84 ute has a compliance plate near centre of firewall, just near airfilter. Do you have it? Mine says 4 cyl diesel. Should clinch it for you that it is not an engine transplant.
The engine rocker still has an aluminium sticker saying built to comply to ADR 9/81(? bit hard to tell in dim light).
Thanks Paul, Workingonit and Gorgie.
That was my take on it too.
I'll take some pics and check the compliance plates. Some engine and chassis numbers might help.
It's still in the shed I found it in, and has been there over 10 years. Just trying to extract it.
Will need to move a few boxes and some accumulated storage first! Hopefully this weekend.
Thanks guys...
Rob.

I found this thread in the series forum.
This one looks exactly the same as mine (even the colour) except the badge on the lower off side wing says 'Land-Rover 3.9D' instead.
Series 3 Stage One V8 Trayback
cheers

If the badge is original, it is a Series 3 Stage 1 - they were the only ones that had that badge.

Thanks John.
One of the few pics I originally took shows the badge.
It all looks pretty genuine.
You'll see there are county doors 1/2 fitted.
The original doors with new tops are already painted up and included.

Doors, as you are probably aware, are essentially interchangeable from 1958 to the end of Defender production.

Hi guys,
I went over and squeezed in the shed for a few more pics.
The compliance plate and rocker sticker are there.
The KM's seem low unless it's going around again?..
The channel bumper is novel....
Alternator has been rebuilt and needs to move from a bucket to the engine bay...
The interior - well theres a few long days!
But it seems from your advice that it is a genuine stage 1 isuzu.
I was planning on 'defernderising*' it when I was told it wasn't a stage 1, but since it's reasonably rare, then maybe keeping it original would be smarter.
Anyone know how many stage 1 isuzus were made?
*(defer-ising was because I have a 16yr old son about to drive. The deefer seats, wind-up windows are there... and alloy winch bar, running rails and wheels would look good... as would a new grille and headlight surounds... clear lenses, a bit of checkerplate.. you get the picture!)
Will have to give it more thought.
Thanks for your help so far.
Rob.
(sorry for the rotated pics, all these apple camera pics seem to do it)
