my 110 county turbo build thread

1985 110 with 400,000km on the clock... engine runs fine... but I want more power.I decided that instead of turbo-ing the current motor, I'll swap it out for a factory 4BD1T from the ex army auction, luckily I did, and luckily it was a runner! Here's some details of my engine swap and later turbo upgrade.

I can't find anypics of how I did the swap right now... hopefully I do in thefuture...
    Here is the 4BD1Tin:
    turbo_stock.jpg

With the everything standard, including a modified to fit original exhaust, it would make 5-6psi. I had a 3” exhaust done and began making 8psi, with fuel turned up a little, removed inner cotton air filter element, I was making 14psi maximum. And then drag raced it, 20 second quarter mile.

Then decided tobring the old isuzu into the 21st century with and upgradeto a cummins 4BT HX30w. Thanks for thesuggestion sheldon.

    turbohx30.jpg

I could not source a V-band clamp to suite the cummins flange, so I welded to it, tig on the inside to seal it, then mig the outside for streangth and looks. I did make a point of fitting a 2.5" vband clamp just under the turbo there to make the exhaust easily removable.

I originally welded up a bracket and aluminium air box for a 4” k&n pod filter. This was a mistake as the induction noise was giving me a headache. The HX30 wastegate is set to 20psi, and it got there very fast with that podfilter, I estimate 1500rpm.

I modified my bracket and fitted a cat air filter (thanks Jamey). Now it drives like my dream daily, fast, quiet and smooth! Still making 20psi, a few hundred rpm's later though, it just feels not quite as 'peaky'with the throttle response to instant high boost, but she goes good! I've recently adjusted the fuel, feels like 150rwhp, my highway EGT's are 250-450c.

The air filter element number is 110-6326, pretty sure I also removed the inner safety element.
Sorry I cannot read the housing number while it's fitted.

    Great report, thanks !!!
Have you measured the max EGT that you generate?
I'm guessing you moderate the EGT's with your right foot.

Any reason you didn't rotate the compressor housing to route the intake pipe better?

I'm guessing you would have the outlet underneath the wastegate actuator instead of above?
I could not do that because of the way the compressor housing enlarges, it fouls the exhaust manifold.

Interesting! Nice job! Your setup does look very neat!
    I didn't think I could do that

I see the boost T, how much boost are you running?

It is tight under there, I did it with three 45 elbows but one is a little kinked.

Currently at 28-30, I have an intercooler to go in when I get around to it.

Here is an old photo to give you an idea, before the holset.

wow that must be making some serious horses!
I'm curious, what turbo is that and how does it compare to the holset?

Here is how I did the piping if anyone was wondering.. (the bracket that supports the air filter has an exhaust clamp at either end supporting the ally pipe.)
