    Turbo Musings

After mulling over the idea of popping a turbo on the County in a few months I had a dig around in the VicRoads website and it appears that popping a turbo onto a 4bd1 would require an engineer's certificate. Not required if the performance is less than 20% more power which is unlikely. Also not required if you modify the car as per the manufacturer did for their turbo version. I'm not too keen on adding another axle nor am I keen on unapproved mods for insurance reasons. Has anyone here in Victoria addressed this issue already ? An engineers certificate is going to add a couple of grand to the exercise.

Thats it. I don't think I can realistically argue that I've made the changes to my County to match the 6x6 mechanically as required by Vicroads.

I'm starting to have a few second thoughts on other grounds as well, I don't want to duplicate the discussion thats going on in another thread but it sounds like my original gearbox will turn up its toes fairly quickly with a turbo up front. This is starting to look like it could be a $8k + exercise if you factor in gearboxes and engineering....

keep the boost under 10 so long as you have the 95 or heavy duty 85 you'll be fine

I guess for the Vicroads side of things if I'm running a lower boost I may be able to avoid the need for engineering as well because I won't have a massive power increase. As the end of the day I'm pretty happy with it as it is, just wouldn't mind a little more go to keep the speed up hills and to be able to overtake sometimes.

Think my son would have something to say about that, he's already got his eyes on it

A couple things you can do - speak to an Engineer first and get a price. Given that it has a full chassis and it's not going to be stressed at all with the turbo mod, and the brakes are ok, ifnot spectacular they will probably sign off on it for $500 or so I should think -worh asking.

Or, get a dyno report pre and post fittment - tune the turbo to give you less than 20% power increase for the oost run, then do what you like once you have the reports -who's going to know anyway? Give the dyno reports to your insurer.

If you really don't like doing dodgy stuff then Engineering is the only way to go along with whatever price that brings - just another cost to be factored into the mod.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
