    Air filters on a 4BD1T

    G'day,

With an engine inbound from the builder this week I am ordering more sundries to speed up the conversion.

I have seen some commentary around removing the inner filter on the standard air cleaner as it is restrictive on a healthy turbo'd Isuzu.

Is this a thing or is it based on gut feel assumptions. Idon't feel comfortable removing it if it was deemed necessary by the developers and would look at other air cleaner options that have enough flow (max 500cfmish) with good filtration.

BTW if anyone has the brackets or pics on how the standard air cleaner mounts I'd be very appreciative of either. I had considered leaving the Td5 air box on but I'm not a fan of it & I think the physicals will be prohibitive.

This is what I have to work with.

    Cheers,

    Jason

    Hi Jason,

I was speaking to BlackKnight (Dave) a few weeks ago, and from memory he said don't remove the internal filter - it's there for a reason.

I haven't had any experience myself - just passing on what I've heard.

I'd be interested to hear what Bearman thinks.

    Cheers,
    GG.

The secondary filter is used on vehicles and plant subjected to rough usage and/or heavy dirt. It does not provide any extra filtration. Whatever particles pass through the primary filter will pass through the secondary filter. It is there to provide filtration in case of damage or leaking at the primary filter. Leave it in place.

Way back when I had a short stint on project bushranger the inner filter was removed on at least the two GMV and probably on the IIMV, for the duration of the bushmaster/taipan phase. The muffler was removed, a 3” straight through exhaust and were dyno tuned to get the extra fuel right.

The two GMV’s followed the trial vehicles all over Australia without issue.

Sadly MAS post trial ordered the cars be returned to standard

Oh, pretty sure the cover plate was left off as well......I was never a fan of popping the bonnet twice a day.

How many 4WD’s run two air filters anyways.

That's interesting Bob...do you remember the model number or cfm?

What did it set you back?

    Cheers,

Using the selection formulae in the Donaldson parts and service book I came up with the following air flow requirements 4BD1 184 cfm, 4BD1T 327 cfm. Donaldson filters are usually sized to provide the required flow when 70% blocked.
