12 volt or 24 volt start

I am giving the old 2A Forward Control a facelift.
I bought this in Bougainville back in 1974 and bought it to Queensland and put the 4BD1 from an NPR into it about 1984.
It was 24 volt then and I fitted a big voltage reducer thing to give me 12 volts for all the usual circuits except start and charge.
The wiring was a mess so ripped it out to start again.
I want a 12 volt alternator. Thats OK but the 24 volt starter , starts its so fast I dont really want to change it.
I was looking at a Series /Parallel switch but they seem hard to find now and the wiring is fairly complex.
Its a 2 bolt starter and just clears the rail. The solenoid hangs over the top.
There are old threads where others are still using 24 volt start (Dougal in NZ) but there is no mention of how they do it.
Any thoughts on 12 volt starters or other ideas before I get into it?

    leave the 24V as is.

put a 12V alternator in and a deep cycle or dual purpose marine battery to run the 12v System (daisy chain as many as you like for the vehicle electrics and fridges)

use a small (7A should be enough) DC-DC steup up charger through a DPST relay hanging off of the ignition (or A VSR if you want to make it easy to charge everything off of a single 12v maintenance charger) to charge the 24V system.

put in a smaller 24 24-12V dc-dc unit to control the EDIC so you can get a start and excite the alternator if you drain the 12V system too far.

Well he did say he wants a 12v alternator, then any thoughts on a 12v starter. So why complicate it, we all know how easy these things are to start.

Thanks Dave but I want to keep it simple. I dont have an EDIC. I just pull the chain

    New Solenoid SERIES PARALLEL SWITCH 1119844 3603871RX 1MR3146 781844 12/24 Volt | eBay

But they dont seem too common any more and the wiring is a bit complicated and the contacts seem to give trouble so I think the link to Verns 12 volt starter wins if it fits OK

    Thanks.
