its a pita to hold any shims in place. I usually pack the shaft ends with high tack grease like turntable grease through a grease needle to help hold it all in place.

you can also wire the shaft in place with loops of tie wire (or brickies string) around the intermediate shaft and the input gear and output gears.

G'day Simon, I will measure up the O rings and get back to you later. Do you know which one it is leaking from. I am thinking that if it's the outer one you won't have to pull the bolt out completely, just pull the plug out enough to expose the O ring but if it's the inner one on the bolt you will have to pull the bolt out completely as well as the plug. If someone else is holding the intermediate shaft in position while you do this I doubt that the thrust shim will fall off the end of the shaft as there is not enough room for it to come out. lube the bolt and O rings before refitting the bolt. Retighten the bolt to 125 ft/lb when you are finished.

Thanks Brian, much appreciated. I _think_ it's the outer one but can't be sure. I guess I'll replace it first per your suggestion as that seems relatively easy and see if it fixes the problem.

The big outer one is 41mm OD 36mm ID (3.5mm thick) and the smaller inner one is 24.6mm OD 19.8mm ID and 2.4mm thick.
