4bd1, r380 and now running a roamer drive.

Some time ago prior to my 4bd1 conversion I purchased a Roamer Drive to fit to my 300 tdi Defender 130. Jump forward and driving the 130 with a disco transfer and 4bd1. All good but still ran out of legs. I had the new roamer drive sitting in the shed unused but well out of warranty. Up jumped a defender transfer case and i thought in for a penny in for a pound. Fitted the transfer and installed the Roamer drive. All I can say is wow. I can now tow my 4.75 boat at 95 kph and the engine does it with ease with out revving its tits off. Not towing easily does 100kph without effort (Gps speed) I have the extended transfer case sump and mounted a temp gauge to it. After running in overdrive for an hour or so {4th gear} temp topped out at 75c well within the specs of temp as suggested by Roamer drive supplier. In the coming months prior to my yearly cape trip i will fit an r380 oil cooler to help steady things. As in all the things there will be persons who will not agree with my choice of the r380 gearbox and roamer drive fitted behind a 4bd1. This post is for the information of fellow members and i really don't care to hear opinions of those who have never run my setup. Thanks for reading. Baz

    thanks for posting the info...

*do you have a tacho? if so at 100kmph whats it doing?
    *is your 4bd1 turbo?
*everything I have read suggests the R380 is stronger than any previous Land Rover box.

Dazza: No tacho but seat of the pants engine is definitely not on the rev limiter with plenty left.

Turbo kit from NSW. I seem to recall we are not to mention names. Throw me a PM if you want further.

Thanks for the positive on the r380 plenty holding their breath for it to fail behind the 4bd1..

*Well I'm sure there is at least one other on AULRO that has a R380 behind a 4bd1 and done something like 500K on it, so I dont see a problem there.
*I fit KLR Automotive turbo kits to customers Perenties, I don't see why we cant mention them, I spose ideally if they supported AULRO that would be better.

Yes I read some of your previous posts with the LT230 cooler, putting a cooler on the R380 wont be beyond your skill set either.
Can it pull 5th with the roamer in or is that stretching it?
    Regards

I have driven in 5th with overdrive engaged not towing. Once again no issues. Eased of at 110 kph with more in the tank. I've read that the 5th gear bearing can be an issue although I have had no issues any sort of rise I knock it back to 4th overdrive. Time will tell but I wish I fitted it when I fitted the 4bd1.

A bit of further info. I used the supplied guage and adjusted fuel when I fitted turbo. After a month or so I went back to original specifications. Motor pulls like a train. I could no see the point in wasting fuel.

Maybe I’m missing something. 100 km/h is not fast. Are you running non standard axle gears?

    In my 84 110 with a 4BD1, turbo and LT95 I can cruise at 130.

    With a Disco LT230 and R380 you should already have higher gearing than me. 1:22 x 0.77 = 0.94.

Red, im sure mine could go faster and possibly make 130kph. I'm quite happy to sit on 100kph most states of Australia speed limit with some 110 kph zones. I know that the Northern Territory has a speed limit of 130 kph. Im quite happy to poke along. No stress on the vehicle or me. Baz
