    County not firing

Merry Christmas everyone. Full disclosure I searched the forum before posting and went through a bunch of the suggestions but still stuck.

I have an '86 County, 4BD1. Has been running very strong for the five years I've owned it. However last week it wouldn't start. I noticed a springy "click" when turning on the ignition, it sounded slightly different to the usual solenoid style "clunk". It cranked over but wouldn't fire.

    - Battery is brand new, it is cranking hard.
    - It previously had an issue with sucking air through the old primer pump- I have replaced that with a new Bosch (12 months). I thought this might be the case again but fuel is getting at least to the fuel filter, as I can see it come out the bottom filter screw when I prime.
    - The springy "click" appears to be the culprit but I can't figure out what it is, especially as it seems like I'm getting plenty of crank from the starter.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, hoping to get her back on the road for the holidays. Cheers.

    Pete

First determine if it's lacking in spark or fuel.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

It's got fuel at the injector pump. Not sure what you mean by lacking spark?

The fuel cut off is a motor thing mounted on the guard from memory. I think it's called an EDIC motor.
It turns an arm on the injection pump when you turn the ignition on or off.

I'm a bit rusty on the details, it's been a long time since I had my County.

    That's were I'd start.

    As above.

One thing not clear is whether the motor is turning, but assuming it is, the EDIC device or its wiring will probably be the issue. An emergency fix is to replace it with a bowden cable to use as an engine stop. (Note that this is not legal, although this scheme was used on Series diesels.)

The EDIC lives in a plastic bag to the right of the brake pedal box. It does tend to stop working if the vehicle has a history of deep wading.
