    Timing.

    Has anyone set their injection timing significantly different to stock?

    There's an interesting thread on 4x4wire about using glowplugs as cylinder head temp gauges and adjusting the timing for the minimum temp at cruise.
    The poster (crossbones) said this always gives results a lot further advanced than factory on the engines he's done it to. He didn't mention exactly which Isuzu engines, but I suspect Isuzu c223's and similar. He's in the US.

    Thanks for that Dougal. I will look into it.

    I pulled the 4BD1-T out of my bushie on Saturday. Going to do some mods (balance, etc) before fitting it into the rangie.

    Don't know about using the glow plugs, but may make up some thermowells and fit thermocouples into the glow plug ports. Would be interesting to see how the temp/timing theory works out. I will probably fit thermocouples before and after the intercooler as well.

    Also pulled the LT230 out of the rangie on Sunday and started to mod the lube system, and adapt it to the Isuzu gearbox (want to keep the other t/case in the bushie).

    Apparently the glowplugs work as Type B thermocouples. They produce only a few millivolts at the temps we're looking at.

    I've finally got my new shaft to adapt the new Isuzu box to the LT230, only took 3 months and they somehow made it from 45 instead of 50mm shaft. Muppets.
    It's away for hardening, I've got just under 3 weeks to get it running again.
    Have one engine mount to remake which is made more difficult by my vise breaking in two on the weekend.

    Which gearbox are you adapting. I looked at it about 5 years ago but adapted the R380 instead as it was quicker. From memory it was an NPR 5 speed but I could be wrong.

    I was running an Isuzu MSA-5P, just changed to an MSA-5G with a slightly different gearspread. Both are from the 4 ton NPR's which the 4BD1T's were fitted to.

    I have everything except the gear linkages drawn up if you want some pictures.
