Well I took the plunge and purchased the County with the Isuzu lump, I took a long train journey down (21 hours) to collect it and wasn't really in the mood for anything, after all that suffering.
However,the deal was done and as soon as I got behind the wheel I'm sure I had a grin on my face from ear to earIt was everything I thought it would be and the 1100 kilometre drive home went without any problems. I stuck to 100 - 110 kph nearly all of the way and the beast didn't miss a beat.Fuel consumption worked out to be approx 10.5 litres - 100 kilometres, which is very good. The engine didn't use any oil, it doesn't smoke and it has no oil leaks
The only queries I have are, when the engine is on overun, it's really noisy out the top of the snorkel, is this normal ??? Or does it just seem worse because the snorkel is at driver window height ???

It's fitted with a four speed box, but how do you know which one it is ?? The only other query is that it has no glow plugs fitted, yet it starts from cold instantly. Can this do any damage at all ?? Sorry for being vague, but I know little about "Diesel Engines"
So overall I'm happy with my choice, the vehicle is rustfree but a bit tatty here and there.The interior also needs tidying too, but that can be sorted over a period of time. Am I right in thinking that no new bits would be available for the interior of this model ???
Can't wait to go up the local forest for a play............

Hi, welcome to the 'engine never say die' club. Yes the sound is normal out the snorkel, however i found it quieter with 2 snorkels.
The gearbox is the same as the 4 speed in the rangies and stage 1s.
Most Defender trim and dash parts are interchangable to a degree.
I have never had my glow plugs wired up, somthing to do with direct injection diesels not needing them.
Whens your turbo getting here?

The gearbox will be an LT95 and you don't need glowplugs on an Isuzu unless you live in Antarctica.

Just to clarify the other posts - gearbox is the LT95 combined gearbox/transfer case, the only four speed box fitted to any coil sprung Landrovers, and the same as in the early Rangerovers, FC101 and the Perentie army vehicles (with minor changes including transfer ratios).
Overrun noise is because the snorkel brings it to ear level and on the overrun it is not drowned out by engine and exhaust noise.
Glow plugs are needed on this engine only in extremely cold weather (think Japan in winter) or if the battery/starter is sick or if the compression is getting low. With any diesel, not using glow plugs will do no damage except possibly to the starter or battery, and is nothing to worry about as long as it starts.
Most body trim parts are unavailable, but a lot of them are interchangeable with later models, and some trim is so simple it can be remade by either yourself or a motor trimmer. Upholstery including new foams are readily available from places like Exmoor trim in the UK.
