Budget 4BD1 turbo install

It goes much better already, even without turning up the fuelling.

I can hear/feel the turbo starting to work just above idle. So far, the turbo seems well matched to the engine. I am expecting very good things once I have it all dialled in.

Even better things once the intercooler is fitted. Btw - the bits arrived today, here is a teaser:

The pipe in the picture is a 2.5" turbo inlet (factory silvia). One of the many such bits I couldn't make use of.


Btw Dougal - you were interested in the dipstick location. I will let you know if it copes with the heat.

Also forgot to say, total cost was about $1000, excluding the exhaust but including EGT and boost guages.

Exhaust is a 3" mandrel all the way through, with a flex pipe (beside the bellhousing - wouldn't fit in engine bay) and a single muffler. Offender90 wants to so some SPL readings on the weekend, so if anyone is interested, I can tell you very exactly what the noise level is.

Great pics mate. The intercooler setup looks quite interesting. Will keep watching to see how it all fits up.

As I said - fuelling was already tweaked, so probably on the rich side. That and going from a (factory) 2" exhaust to a 3" probably accounts for the difference. EDIT - and I am only talking 5-10% increase at the moment (accurately measured using the tried and tested "butt dyno" method :D http://kalecoauto.com/index.php'main...products_id=41 )

Don't worry - I will be turning the screw some more when I have an EGT.

Slug_burner - Matt already answered that. Have a look on outerlimits and all should be revealed.

Nice job, you need an 07 bonnet, then you can fit anything under there.

I removed my W-A intercooler the other day and am currently running without an IC alltogether. I reckon i will go air to air next time as it is less complex, and less to go wrong in the bush.

Speaking of which Andy - what happened to your plan to make fibreglass bonnets?

Complexity and extra weight are the only things I don't like about the WTA system, but hopefully the extra performance (especially in low range when an a-a is doing SFA), and less complex ducting arrangement will make up for it.

I don't think thats necassarily the case, with a top mount yea, but a front mount, will be achieving similar efficiency as compared to road speed, keeping in mind, your fan in conjuction with your radiator, keeps the car cool, so your imitation of air travel through the intercooler comparative to road speed using the fan as oppossed to travel, should be haveing some effect

and to be honest, when I was in the bush last weekend, the only way to get the pyro to rise massively, was to be in high range, pushing up steep hills just because you could:D, but to load the motor enough to raise temps greatly lek that, you had to be motoring:twisted:
