Yep they will do it. It must confuse the rack and advance. Ive had a few tractors here do this (IN line Pump) only they had oil bath air filters
You can inagine what happened

This was a really strange occurance, and the more I thought about it the more I am convinced it happened.
I was testing the recently fitted Detroit locker with the camper trailer hitched on , climbing a steep rocky section in 2nd low, and I stalled out the engine. Before I had a chance to put in the clutch and apply the brake for a restart, it was running BACKWARDS down the slope, oil light on, smoke chuffing OUT the snorkel, and I was STILL in 2nd gear, clutch OUT!
I had to switch off the motor to stop it, and it restarted well, with a bit of a hiccup and some smoke, all was well.
I can only assume that the load of the trailer and the slope I was on was enough to 'kickstart' the engine in an anticlockwise rotation, it would only idle and was quite rough, but running all the same. It was the smoke out the snorkel that got me though!

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

They did that to the crane where I used to work
Except, instead of turning it off, they hung around, wondering why the hydraulics weren't working, while it was smokeing out the intake
Results..........brand new engine![]()
What is the comp like JC?
In some diesels if they get low in comp but are hot they will do that as it is fairly easy for it to start again.
Ive had it happen with a few older Kubota engines on mechanical drive machines and Ive seen it happen in an old truck that I think had a detroit 2 stroke or something in it which was idling up a hill in Id assume low range (it was a 6x6 thing used for dragging out logs from the bush but had no body on it any more) with the driver looking behind him. hit a tree, and then started driving slowly back down the hill again, the driver didnt know what to do as as it had a mech shut down which blocked the air in the intake so they jammed a log in the exaust to shut it down.
The Kubota's are similar to the 4BD1 though with a fuel sol to shut them down.
Hey JC,JL here
Yep did the same thing in mine a few years ago trying to climb a 2 mt rock face and it almost stalled and kicked off backwards. I did the same and sat there gob smacked looking at smoke coming out the snorkle untill the old brain kicked in and I switched it off. Restarted all ok.
Apparently there are not many engines that can survive doing that
