    Mystery Rumbles And Noises.......

    My County has developed a tinkering noise that sounds like a loose bracket rattling on the exhaust only it isn't.
    It's also giving a strange vibration which appears to come through the drivetrain, a bit like an unbalanced wheel.But it doesn't do it all the time and when it does, it's usually between 60 -80 kph.

    Can anybody throw any pointers as to what it might be ??? Could it be play in a driveshaft or similar ??

    Very occasionally there is a slight clunk on take off too. This all started after a day out following the ho hars

    I'd say a universal joint, if it is that noisy then CHECK IT NOW!

    OR, it could be a mudshield on one of the pinion flanges, or a loose set of flange bolts. Either way, go outside and take a look before you go out tomorrow. Leaving it could be disastrous

    Agree with JC. Check your propshaft UJs etc ASAP. I had the same sound and a UJ had self destructed, taking part of the yoke with it.

    I dont agree.

    if its a UJ or flange theres no could about it.

    It WILL be disastrous. its just a matter of when.

    Thanks guys, I'll have a good look round in the morning and see if I can spot anything obvious. Trouble is I'm not mechanically minded Local garages are too busy to help out due to the easter rush !!

    One thought.... join the RAC if you haven't already and call them out to look.

    It's good to have membership if you drive a Land Rover that's not under a warranty whether you are mechanically minded or not. I know it's practically useless if you're in the middle of the Simpson, but it's great if you're driving around town / 100km from home.

    Last u-joint I had flog out did exactly that, right on 70km/h it was noisiest, slight taper up and down in noise either side of that speed.

    It was the same in 4th and 5th so I knew it was something after the gearbox.

    You're right chaps, universal joint is buggered near the rear diff also noted that the bottom bushes on the rear shocks are buggered too.

    Luckily I managed to get the bits and am just putting it back together, the uj was a bit tricky but fingers crossed no bearings have slipped while I was putting it in.
