    Crankcase breather height

    Hey guys
    Just wondering what the correct or beneficial height for the crankcase breather on a 4BD1T is for hard off road is. Has anyone come up with a good design???. Other than spewing a bit of oil out when on very steep declines are there any other problems you could have if the breather is at an incorrect height??.

    I have mine shoved open inside the left chassis rail. Built in rust proofing. I wont run a closed system as oil ingestion is bad news. Maybe a catch can with a drain and valve returning to the sump on a closed venting would be safer if I ever have to..

    Only thing wrong mine being open is it goes under water in deep fording here, so far I have found no water in the oil as a result.

    One of these types of things?





    My old mitsu needs one as the intercooler has to be flushed out every 15k.

    I/ll re phrase the question. Not the tube coming off the breather, but the actual height of the breather canister itself.

    That really doesn't matter. The breather is designed to work as an airlock. I am sure anywhere between the height of the chassis rail and the bonnet will be fine. BUT, the best option is to fit an efficient separator like the provent and plumb it back into the intake so it becomes a sealed system.

    Are these for sale yet?

    I'm running my own design catch can which works okay but still passes some oil.

    Will a provent still pass enough oil to keep my steel pipes from rusting on the inside?

    They have been for sale for a while now. Not especially cheap, but only about the same as a bling catch can.

    They will remove about 90% of the mass of oil with a standard element (much better than a catch can). The remaining oil mist which exits the filter will be small, diffusive particles, which should still coat any metal bits nicely.
