I'm in the process of replacing the clutch and transmission in my UK spec 83 110, that is located in the US. It was retrofitted in 1989 with a 4BD1T. So far, I have sourced most of the bits I need with some help from various members of the board.

When I pulled the old LT95 out, I noticed that who ever installed it in the UK did not get the proper LT95-4BD1 bellhousing. Rather, they cut and notched the standard LT95 bellhousing, leaving gaping holes for much to get in to the clutch. I have since had the holes patched but still allow for fitment around the ring gear and clutch bits. The old clutch was the standard LT95 clutch disk and pressure plate. My problem is that the pressure plate (8970317592) does not fit any of the holes or locating pins in the flywheel. I'm trying to figure out the best course of action:

1. pull the old flywheel, have it resurfaced and drilled/tapped for the new pressure plate
2. get a new flywheel, if so what part no?
3. keep the old flywheel and use new clutch bits as originally fitted even though they are much smaller than the suzi bits
4. other recommendations?

It seems as if #2 is the best long term option, but I don't know what part # to use and the local(ish) isuzu dealer could only give me the # for the flywheel that matched the MSA5D. Help?

Hi Paul,
The proper part number (Isuzu) for the flywheel is 5123301481. I would imagine the cheapest option would be to have the present flywheel machined and retapped, as the price for a new flywheel in Australia is about A$800. I do have a s/h one here that is fine but needs machining but it is probably just as cheap to have your present one done. I am curious as to what one is fitted to your motor as I havent seen one yet with a smaller clutch that the one as fitted to landrovers. Even the non turbo p/plate has the same diameter and locating pins/studs as the turbo one. Maybe the flywheel/clutch is from something else. If you have it removed from the motor weigh and measure it and get back to me and I will dig my spare one out and compare. Regards......Brian

Heres another part number. 8943430490. That one is for the 4BD1T motor. The other one is for the standard N/A motor. I dont know if there is any difference in them as they both use the common pressure plates....Brian

From what you described, my guess is the the 4BD1T was an Isuzu truck engine. The truck flywheel was probably drilled and tapped for a Rangerover clutch.

The Isuzu engine that Land Rover used in Australia is different in a few ways to the Isuzu truck engine. There are different flywheel, clutch and starter in Isuzu truck 4BD1T's, depending upon year model.

If you were to swap the flywheel so you can use the same clutch as Land Rover 4BD1, you may have other issues such as starter not meshing (because you don't have the correct flywheel housing or starter).

AFAIK, Rangerover clutch is smaller than Land Rover 4BD1 clutch, which is similar diameter to early Isuzu 4BD1T clutch, but smaller than later Isuzu 4BD1T clutch.

I have the early 4BD1T (truck, not landy) clutch, flywheel and pressure plate. They are 275mm.
Later truck 4BD1T went to (I think) 300mm.

Does this help identify what you have?

I pulled the flywheel. It is 13 1/8" ~333mm in diameter, excluding the ring gear. I have not yet weighed it. When the 3 locating dowels were pulled, only 2 holes lined up with those on the new pressure plate (8970317592). I decided to drill and tap to fit. They will be close to the edge, but should be ok.

Thanks for the part number. I'm going to try to utilize the flywheel that I have instead of buying new, but it's good to have just in case.

Yes, the Range Rover clutch in smaller ~9.5". My flywheel has two sets of holes, an original set near the outer periphery and a second that had been drilled and tapped a bit closer in.

333mm that's a lot less (38mm, or 1-1/2") than my 4BD1-T (from Isuzu truck) at 371mm diameter, excluding ring gear - the bolt circle for my pressure plate is 350mm diameter.

Mine is 390mm OD.

Does 333mm even reach your starter?

That's really odd. I'm surprised at the difference.

It has a 3 bolt starter... no prob reaching the ring gear
